This would be a great restoration if the price is right...I've never played a better guitar.

Rupe, what do you think of this though?

Has this guitar slide off from being propped up that much or was there binding on this? That pic scares me a tad.

very cool, I always admired Rupe's Rands. never played one myself.

thats a pretty cool story he tells, I never knew that the dudes from the misfits were in business with rand although I knew they used to play them. That would be a cool piece to have if the price stays low.

That pic bothers me too. There's no binding on these...the clear comes up to top the edge of the fretboard. That said, it's difficult to tell what's going on there...it almost looks like somebody tried to add binding...guitars just don't wear like that. I also wonder about what appears to be a screw hole near the locking nut screws on the back of the neck.

The story he tells is mostly correct. The guitars that Rand was building with Doyle look much different than what became the production model...much more "gothic" looking. The production guitars were built to Rand's specs by Tom Anderson in his CA shop and the paint work was done by Rand himself in Pat Wilkins' shop. This particular guitar is an '87 production guitar...not a prototype. They have no visable serial numbers, just a date carved into the paint inside the trem cavity that serves as a SN.

Man something is just wrong in that picture. And the action is so high you could drive a boat under the strings.

Hi eveyone,
I have been looking for awhile so here we go.
This looks like a clear coat issue on the sides of the fretboard and the pickups and floyd looks like someone with a very acidic sweat that did not clean the guitar at all look at all of the grime in between the frets on the fretboard. Hey Rupe are you going to pick it up?? I wonder if it would be worth it to have the guitar repainted by Rand? I miss the blue Rand I sold last year.

Probably just needs a truss rod adjustment. The wood is discolored and the clear is delaminating. I'd hit it for a hundred or so.

yup, that guitar looks beat. I've seen guitars in pawn shops in better condition. yikes

I've got a bid in but I won't win this one. In good condition its a $3K guitar but this thing needs $1K+ in restoration and then it's a refin so I'm most likely staying away.

There's some strangeness to this one that's keeping me away as well...tuners seem wrong, first switch has been replaced, appears to possibly have a crack on the headstock, and I still can't figure out the finish thing on the side of the neck. It almost looks like something was glued there. Notice the obscured side dot at the 12th fret...missing clear coat wouldn't leave that kind mess.

The clear is discolored. That's what that funky yellowish brown color is. The reason you can't see the dot is because the clear coat that covers it is no longer clear. If you look to the far right you can see where the funky brown clear is lifted up and flaking off. You sand that down it will be clean wood. You can also see the discolored clear on the top edge of the fretboard, probably overspray from the refinish

You could be right but I think there's more to it than that. The 17th fret has discolored clear while the 15th and 16th frets show normal clear. I'm thinking somebody tried to glue the chipped off clear back on or tried some sort of home touch up job. I can't recall ever seeing a discolored clear coat turn damn near completely opaque like that...and definitely not on a Rand.

I would think that is a refinish. No?
I would normally think that to be the case based on the mutiple finsh layers that are easily seen at the edge of the neck. All of my Rands have extremely thin finishes...nothing close to as thick as what's shown in these pics. That said, the paint job looks like a Rand Havener original so I'm a bit perplexed on this one.

I think that the cracking and the lifting of the finish is making the finish look thicker than it is. Looks like this one was exposed to the cold and heat cycles. Like being stored in an outside storage unit. That would probably explain the rust as well. I wonder if the seller has the facory case?

It may make it look thicker, but I can still clearly see at least four fairly heavy layers...Rands have the paint coat and a clear coat. Theres also an extremely thin primer/sealer that has no appreciable thickness to it. I wonder if this could have been a factory repaint over a previous finish?
