I would think that is a refinish. No?
I would normally think that to be the case based on the mutiple finsh layers that are easily seen at the edge of the neck. All of my Rands have extremely thin finishes...nothing close to as thick as what's shown in these pics. That said, the paint job looks like a Rand Havener original so I'm a bit perplexed on this one.

I think that the cracking and the lifting of the finish is making the finish look thicker than it is. Looks like this one was exposed to the cold and heat cycles. Like being stored in an outside storage unit. That would probably explain the rust as well. I wonder if the seller has the facory case?
It may make it look thicker, but I can still clearly see at least four fairly heavy layers...Rands have the paint coat and a clear coat. Theres also an extremely thin primer/sealer that has no appreciable thickness to it. I wonder if this could have been a factory repaint over a previous finish?

You are right about the thickness this one may be a refinish. I thought most of these were a base coat white or black then what ever colors. The blue 89 I had had white then blue then purple then pearl then clear and it would change color. The bidding has broke $1000.00 for this one. That is alot for this condition.

Probably some shill bidding going on the original auction. Guy didnt sell it for what he wanted so....
back up with a crazy price.

***EDIT*** different seller last time "Purplefunnybunny".... :D

That thing needs an official Viking sea burial. Doubt I would waste a good boat on it though....

I'm actually trying to buy this Rand but the current owner won't go any lower than 2,000 even in the poor condition it's in.

Supply and demand...find another one. If I wanted another one, I'd take it at $2k...you could easily pay double or triple that for a guitar that would not play as well or sound as good (assuming that this one is as good as the others that I've played).

That said, if you want one in mint, NOS condition, PM me ;)

I hear you man! It's just those fish and chips on the side of the fret board that scare the sh*t out of me. The same guitar sold for for under $1,500 a few months back which sounds just about right to me being in the condition its in. I'mg gonna drive to the owners place pretty soon, is there any things I should look out for? Never played one before so I don't know what to expect!

With that said, I cant send Pm's but email me when ever you get a chance!
