So I sell a guitar on Ebay. I installed locking tuners on it and said in the auction that I'd also include the regular stock tuners, which are worth about 30 bucks. So I forgot to pack the regular tuners...OOOPS. I ship the guitar, I check tracking and it arrives and a few days later. I send an email to the buyer asking if everything was cool, no reply. I check my feedback and he's not sending feedback. I send another email a few days later asking if everything is ok, no reply. OK, I figure, he's just one of those who doesn't send feedback or respond.

Well a few days later I see there's a case opened up in Ebay that indicates that the item was missing parts. IN there it says the tuners weren't included. Then he finally sends a message to me asking if I was sending the tuners, I say yes, and he says great and he will let me know when they show. I exhale, ship the tuners and hopefully this is all done with. Well, I see EBay charged back my credit card the amount he paid me AND he still has the guitar. WTF shit is this? All for a set of 30 dollar tuners. How can they hold the funds against me when this guy has the guitar. What if he changes his mind and send it back after he drags it around his driveway or something? Why did he have to run off and open a dispute without emailing me first?

If feel like ripping this guy a new one but I'm biting my tongue until it gets resolved. If he leaves me positive feedback and send him a negative, can he still say something back?

How are you going to leave him negative feedback? Sellers aren't allowed to give negative feedback anymore.

You do have his address. I say you and Louisville Slugger make a road trip if things get f'd.

WOw, serious? I didn't even know that. That is such bullshit.

Yep, they say it is defective, file a claim, get their money back, and are supposed to return the amp on the honor system....

Sell to people you know. Otherwise there is no protection. Fucked up situation.

I backed out of a sale after the buyer seemed sketchy. I would rather have someone be pissed than be ripped off.

Something needs to be put in place with eBay that protects the seller a bit more.

Total BS!

And the guy waited 23 days to open the dispute.

Sell on eBay using PayPal. Only link a bank account to your PayPal, not a credit card. Make sure there is no $ in that particular bank account.

As soon as receiving funds from the item you sell, transfer the funds from your PayPal account to that bank account(takes 2-3 days). Remove funds from bank account.

If a buyer tries to fuck you, there are no funds in account for PayPal/eBay to get.

pretty sure there is (was?) a hold period before you can transfer any recent funds, and I'll take a guess and say it is probably as long as the buyer has to file a claim.

With no protections for the seller, and approx 13% fees (for selling upper end gear), I would be very desperate to sell something on ebay!

I had a strange interaction with a buyer here at Rig Talk once. Guy might be the greatest dude in the whole world! Who knows? BUT I sold an amp and we agreed on PayPal gift option. Then next day the guy pays via regular PayPal. I immediately refunded his money! Not because regular PayPal was used. I use that all the time. It was just the fact he did something different than we discussed!

EDIT: makes me nervous when people don't do what they say...

I can't speak for everybody but I get cleared funds in my PayPal as soon as the buyer pays me. I have insisted on this with PayPal over the phone & they have given me this privilege. Due to my stellar eBay history of never having a complaint against me, I insisted that they do this. Not everyone has my negotiating skills! lol (by the way I've only had 46 eBay transactions since 2008)

Even for folks that don't get granted this privilege, it should only take till the item is delivered to receive the cleared funds.

In the OP's case he would have been protected with my strategy.

eBay,like it or not, is usually the fastest way to get something sold.

The funds cleared into my account almost a month ago. That has nothing to do with the fact that they can charge you back if someone opens a dispute. I have a credit card on file with Paypal and they charged it to that. That card will be removed from Paypal ASAP. Fuck them.

This is probably the way to go.

This is why I told you to setup your PayPal account the way I said(without a credit card)for any future sales.
edit: I didn't see your above post before I posted this!

Call Paypal now! I had a chargeback for $800. I was without the item and my money for over a month. Someone here said to call Paypal which I did. They documented my complaint. I then called them every three days. Eventually they put my money back but it was a pretty stressfull ordeal since you have no control.

If the buyer has an issue like that, and files a dispute, doesn't he have to send the guitar back to unwind the deal?

The thing that gets me is that this is an open and active case. No decision was reached yet, but they went ahead and charged my credit card.

But I just got off the phone with Ebay and after providing tracking number for the tuners they found in my favor and are closing the case and sending a credit back to my card.

The guy I sold the guitar to wants to keep the guitar, so why in the Hell did he open a dispute over tuners instead of emailing me? Some people...I tell ya.
