I don't mind PP so much. A 3% charge to transfer money to me is not that big of a hit. My finances don't revolve around 3%. But, 10% for eBay is a totally different story. The actually don't do shit but provide a parking place for your item. PP holding your funds is not right though for the seller.

Steve, Forget the monetary aspect. Using PP the seller has zero protection. If this guy who just bought yer guitar doesnt like the gauge strings you have on it, he can file a dispute and its over. I sold a neck and the buyer {after a week} says it was damaged. I had a ton of pics from every angle and sent them all to PP. I figured it was a no brainer. PP finds in favor of this guy and i'm out $$$. The ass kicker was that he emailed me after the whole mess to tell me he just wanted to copy it and didnt have any intention of keeping it cause he didnt have the money....

Did you get your neck back? These credit card reversals are what scare me most. I would hunt someone down and fuck the remainder of their life up if it was over something of value.

Yea, I only sell > $500 items on Ebay, the fees have just gotten way too high, plus add the 3% Paypal charge as well.

I sold a guitar for 2800, eBay caps the final value fees at 250.00. PayPal took 110.00 because it was an overseas buyer and they change more.
Total fees + $360.00 Crooks.

I wish on the paypal fee that you could pass is on the buyers on ebay. When I buy an item off the forums, I don't mind covering the paypal fee as the buyer, since paypal for me is less hassle than getting a money order and mailing it out.

I don't like the fees on ebay either. In the past though, if I wanted my item to be sold, than ebay was the best way to get that done. The fees are climbing to a point where in some cases I will just have to keep the item....

Let me preface my comment by agreeing with others that "I HATE EBAY".

However, it is hard to argue with what they are doing, when a traditional auction house takes 20% to 30% off the gross auction proceeds, whereas eBay is only taking 10% and opens your auction items up to a much larger customer base than a traditional auction house.....

Plus, you can't commingle the eBay fees with the PayPal fees, as they are not explicitly related. You CAN often pay for eBay items via methods other than PayPal, which can eliminate the 3% PayPal fee. If you choose to pay/receive using PayPal, it's only fair that they get a piece of the action. PayPal is a commercial venture afterall, with real operating costs that need to be offset by revenue and, more importantly, PROFITS in order to continue as a service business!

That having been said, I STILL HATE EBAY, and I DESPISE PAYPAL'S RIDICULOUS FOREIGN EXCHANGE RATES/POLICIES!

I don't get all of the hate for PayPal?! 3% is a pretty reasonable fee for the service they are providing. $3 on a transfer of $100? What's wrong with that?!

I do think that they should consider putting in a cap/ceiling on fees for large dollar transactions. However, they do need to be appropriately compensated for the risk they are taking on in offering this service to the public.

The online auction is much cheaper than the fee at an actual auction or estate sale.

It just costs more to flip gear. I was just getting used to the serious rapid depreciation of gear. Now add another 10%. So something is worth about 60 or so % of the purchase price if sold on fleabay.

What ya gonna do?

Build the fees into your minimum price...explain it in the auction if you feel you need to justify it.

My issues aren't fee based, rather how they manage to frequently screw the seller and even occasionally the buyer with their policies.

as long as people keep buying on eBay, sellers will continue to get the shaft. I haven't sold anything on eBay in a couple of years now. Not worth the hassle and douchebag tire kickers who can't fuckin read a description.

The volume sellers still seem to be surviving there, spreading the costs over a wide swath of inventory/sales.

Not exactly. What they do is bring you by far the largest possible audience who may be interested in buying your guitar. That is either worth the 10% + to you or not, but they are providing you far more than a parking spot for your items... Otherwise you'd just wait for them to sell on the forums, no?

Steve

You guys gaming the eBay system to take advantage of the huge audience they supply are just as bad or worse than eBay overcharging you. If you think the service is too expensive don't use it and find another way to sell. If enough people do that eBay will be required to change its fee structure. Don't stoop to their level if you think you are being ripped off.

I haven't sold on eBay in ages. I sell on forums. Only way I'd use eBay again would be a fee structure change or abject desperation.

My 2 cents...

Steve

I been a member since 96. Loved it when I first joined it.
Sold and bought like a madman. Back then there was Yahoo Auctions.....anyone remember that?
It was free to list on Yahoo. But Ebay killed it and now its out of control.
When I was selling heavy it would be nothing to have a 100 items for sale.
Monthly fees werent that outrageous. Now I wont sell on that site unless I really want to move something.
The fees are insane. Like someone mentioned earlier.....if you add in the fees into the sale price.....your item wont move.
It sucks. I rarely use it at all. Still a good place to buy things pretty reasonable though.
But for selling....Nah.

Yep, it's just like the people that don't declare all of their income on their tax returns each year, because they claim we're all "over-taxed". Blah, blah, blah.

These same people don't seem to have any problem enjoying all of the public services and infrastructure everyone else's tax dollars are paying for.

I may be flamed, but if you are surprised by the fees eBay charges, its your fault for not reading the terms. 10% is not a huge amount (although $600 is still $600 and I get that). Dont like it? Dont use it.
