I was going to call this thread "My amp died last night"...but after seeing the thread about BeZo's drummer, I thought that'd be in bad taste and disrespect towards him.
Anyway, I was at a blues jam last night- I just brought my Marshall 50 watt JCM 800 slaved via a THD Hotplate into my Roland Jazz Chorus. It had been a few weeks since I last played it but thought it'd be fine. I turned it on, tried all sorts of settings, ended up cranking everything up to the moon- and bugga all sound......
One of the guys in the blues jam was an old muso who has been around for yonks...he genuinely seemed to know what he was talking about, and said the problem was that the "EEC83" valve needed replacing. I thought it might have been the poweramp valves dying, but he said they wouldn't be.
Anyway, I wasn't aware until just now that the EEC83 is also the 12AX7 preamp valve, or so what I've read.
So I thought I'd better take the amp in for a tune-up while I am at it getting the preamp valve replaced. No modding- in fact someone stuffed around with the circuit on the Hi Input with a half-arsed Jose' Mod before I bought it, so I want that removed.
What preamp valves in particular would you recommend? Should I get an SPAX7 like in my MarkIV? I want a full-bodied, rich warm sound that sounds really nice when clean, as I can just push the amp with my dirt pedal for high gain stuff. I've got the MarkIV for cranked amp gain...
