Hi

I recently bought seconhand egnater IE4 preamp, and at high gain settings (ecpecially on chanell 4) is lot of humm and very noisy. On low gain settings (till 6 maybe 7) is everything OK (just little buzzing).

Is this normal with this preamp?

I have T.C. electronic G-force, and even with noise gate is very noisy especially on chanell 4. with maximum gain.

Do you maybe recomended me Rocktron HUSH II super C as noise gate?.

or maybe I should replacing tubes to resolve this humm.

The preamp has beutiful tone, like I never heard..., but only thing which I dislike is this humm on hi-gain settings.

This is european version. I live in Europe, and voltage iz 230 w..., so maybe I should check trafo?

Maybe your suggestion with IO setup of g-force and IE4?

Thanx and sorry for bad english!

I'd start with looking into the tubes for trouble first, then go
into checking all cables next.....Have you tried running the IE4
straight into your poweramp without anything in between? It
might be a bad patch cable on one of your other units...But I'd
say try all the tubes first and see if one(or more) is bad........

at lots of gain, you are bound to get some sort of noise, but if its out of hand, yeah, check cables, and or upgrade cables, try different tubes etc

It shouldn't be humming out of control or anything.

Like they said:

1. try just the preamp with a power amp
2. try some different tubes
3. try a different building/power circuit
4. try your guitar through another high gain amp.
5. etc.

Hum is not inherent to the preamp. maybe it has a bad cap or something.

Also, a noise gate is not the way to fix a noise issue.

Does it hum with your guitar not plugged in? If it hums with the guitar plugged in it could be your guitar. Did you try the ground lift on the back of the pre amp?

I've try everything exept changing tubes. I have 3 charvel guitars and with every guitar is very noisy on channel 4 on maximum gain. With G-force noise gate sound is much better, but still humming. On every channel, when gain is at 12.00 o clock everything is fine..., but when gain is at 3 o clock and higher than humm is realy loud. I also have rocktron piranha, and with this unit I have no problems with noise. But piranha has HUSH built in, and have only 2 12ax7 tube.., maybe because of that is silent.

I'll try ground switch set on normal and after that on lift. I can't hear the difference.

my rig is:
Furman AR2306 power conditioner
Korg DTR2000 tuner
TC electronic G-force fx
Egnater IE-4 preamp
Carvin T100 poweramp

What are you recomended for my rig about ground switch option? Lift or normal?

thank you very much for your replys!!!

I have one of the originals and ch4 is definitely noisier, but I would only use the gain up at around 10 or 11 o'clock for that EJ/Holdsworth type thing, so it is fine for me.

Thanks!

Please if you can tell me how to set up Ground knob (normal or lift). I set it normal is this ok for this big rig?
