Bought a rebel 30 head to practice thru . is there any way to tighten up the gain sound Tried new power tubes gonna try preamp next .Or is it just part of the egnater sig tone ? Looking for more of an 80`s modded marshall sound

My guess would be that the preamp tubes will make a much more significant difference here. Unless you're driving your power tubes to the point of distortion, preamp tubes will make all the difference. I know Eurotubes sells high gain JJ sets. I like JJ's in my Renegade. Give them a try if you like.

I will say that depending on what brand of 80's modded Marshall tone you're after, you may not have the right amp. My Renegade does Hard Rock well but it is simply not a high gain, Metal amp. While the gain is generally there, the voicing is not. An eq pedal and/or a Metal style pedal is necessary to go in that direction - especially for modern metal. I've never gotten the impression that the Tweeker, the Rebel, or or the Renegade were intended for pure Metal use.

Someone here will surely correct me if I'm wrong.

Good luck.

I recently bought the same amp. I know what you mean about the gain. It's not a high gain amp. Swapping the pre-amp tubes will make more of a chnge than the power tubes in particular V1. I'm not sure where your located but below is the tube mix that I used and it made a big difference! The only thing different from below is that I'm using a Ruby 12AX7AC5 HG+ in V1 instead to the Tongsol that came with the tone kit. I bought the Tongsol as well and you can hear the difference between it and the Ruby. I'm considering swapping out the speaker but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have a Blackstar 5 watt combo where swapping the speaker yielded at less a 70% improvment in tone.

If you want high gain call Doug and he'll sell you high gain preamp tubes.

Replace the phase inverter tube to a sovtek 12ax7 lps longplate balanced triodes ,this tube wont distort a allready gained up distortion and yep V1 V2 V3 V4 but get a great V1 12ax7 i went from a tungsol ecc803s gold to a genelex and then a good nos mullard 12ax7. all good EQ and crunch.

I replaced my stock PI with one and the guys saying its a good PI were not kidding.
Chords came thru distortion 20% better with same settings.

you bought the wrong amp if you want Marshall tones imo.
Egnater amps don't do 80's Marshall tones, or any Marshall tones imo.
They don't claim to either.
Egnater distortion is unique and not Marshally at all.
Cleans & OD are great on the R30 imo but are closer to Fender than Marshall.
Don't think different tubes will help you although I would stick to the EL84 side.
And it does have a "Tight" switch you could use.
It's mostly in the designed amp voicing.
Egnaters are not Marshall clones.

Easy to get great Marshall gain tones though thru the R30's clean channel simply by plugging in an MI Audio Super Crunchbox pedal.

So who was the 80's player you want to sound like?
It's 80% hands, 20% gear. That being said, a parametric eq can do wonders for your Chops.

I think Egnater is very much in a hotrod Marshall/Bogner type tone but they have many models.

The Rebels IMO don't do it , the Renegade will do fine for 80s stuff again my opinion

Interesting, I feel that the 6V6 side gives more of the Marshall tone.
Using a good OD, working with the tight switch gets me close to 80's Marshall.
I'm a huge Malmsteen fan, I gravitate towards his tone when I think 80's Marshall.
I'm current using a BB Preamp sometimes stacking with the EP booster to push my Rebel. I recently aquired a Wampler Dual Fusion pedal which also drives the Rebel into 80's shred.
