My dilema - I need a super scaled down rig for home use.

I played an Egnater Rebel tonight for awhile and have to admit I was impressed for what it is. The things it has going for it:

Size
sounds pretty good
Cool blendable 6v6 / EL84 ability
Variable voltage ala VVR / power scaling (takes the oomph off - not the volume)
Cost

Cons:
it's cute and fugly at the same time...that two tone thing is played out for me. I wouldn't hesitate to build a koa headshell for it - this thing would be a home use unit...

On the flip side a UA would be perfect to accomplish my needs too and bring my Komet Concorde clone down to reality with a 1x12 and keep the footprint small. My Aiken has a killer master volume but the beauty of the UA is the ability to get the amp cooking - the Aiken would benefit from that as well...

Yeah, two entirely different things but never in this lifetime is the Rebel going to sound as good as the Aiken or Komet clone - but neither of those will be as small as the Rebel, and the small footprint is the goal...the UA would be several hundred $$$ cheaper too...I guess the other consideration is that I will never be able to use the Komet clone playing out without some sort of attenuation....aint gonna happen

Thoughts ?

For you this is a no brainer bro, the UA will always be there to throw the leash on any single channel you have that month but the Eggie will be long gone.

Take my comments with a big grain of salt since you know my situation with the UA...but...

Basically, I'm toying with the idea of selling my old Super Bass. If I keep it, I would definitely keep or buy another UA and sell my Hotplate. The UA does the bedroom thing much better. Simple as that. But like I said in my other thread, if you're just knocking the volume down a little bit, the HP is a cheaper way to do it.

I've had a Rebel on my mind too after seeing the Youtube clips. My biggest concern with it is that it seems like anytime I try a piece of gear where one of the big draws is that it's inexpensive, I end up not keeping it. That, and I know that for a few hundred more I can get a Budda SD18 which I know is a USA-made, quality amp, that can get great low-volume tone. But I would still like to try one.

Dude, nice way to net it out   I especially like the "any single channel you have that month..." part. I actually haven't geeked out on amps in awhile - although September - March was a pretty good roll: Cameron > Suhr Badger > a couple of Divided by 13's > Swart SST. The constant was / is the AIken Intruder. The Komet clone is pretty much magic too. Harnessed with a UA into a high quality 1x12 would do fine for low volume stuff...

and Ratter, you know where to find me ;)

I'm playing with the idea of getting a Rebel that seems like a fun ride.

+1

Hey Steve

The UA works wonders with the Concorde, you`ll need to change the settings on the concorde a little at lower levels, but i think you`d really make good use of the UA being a single channel amp whore!!! :D
I ran my Concorde allmost exclusively through the UA and loved it

I'm now in a positon to agree with the above statement on all accounts ;)

Super cool unit, tons of possibilities....hard to put it into words but the big amp feel is still there even at low volumes....I'm liking it so far.

Thanks to Ratter for making this happen
