So, got an Egnater Renegade head used a few months back, guy I bought it from didn't gig out, just played it for fun at home. He had an issue with the Power Transformer and replaced it with a Mercury Magnetics... that works great but about a week ago I started having intermittent volume issues and have narrowed it down to the output transformer (still egnater made). Should I replace this with another Mercury Magnetics or should I stick with the Egnater? Also, any chance the part would be under warranty even if I didn't purchase it from a dealer?

That would be very odd to have an intermittent output transformer. How did you determine that was the problem?

I waited until the volume was intermittent again and then went to the back of the amp to look at the tubes to see if anything noticeable was happening. I gently tapped on the transformer a few times and the volume began jumping back and forth as I tapped. I suppose it could be vibration reaching the power tubes... but the tubes seemed fine so I assumed it was the transformer. I will take it to my local shop and see if they can determine for sure if it is a tube or transformer.

how does a tube "seem fine?", power or pre?

check the PI tube first. switch it out with a known good one. do the dance from there on with the rest of your preamp tubes, if you know how to.

im pretty sure that tapping on a power transformer isn't the place to start troubleshooting your amp.

on second though, yeah, just take it to your tech if you haven't already.

Seems like the ticket... I'm as cheap (or cheaper) than the next guy, but so many of these kinds of threads on forums seem to have the strong assumption that there are simply no amp techs out there. Or that the amp in question is so different that no tech could understand how to work on it so people guessing on a web forum, without actually seeing the amp is the best anyone can do. .

Not saying that's the thoughts of the o.p. But this kind of fits the mode.

Take it to a tech. Get their opinion. Either pay them to fix it or sell it for parts. I think this is your best bet.

I love my Renegade. fwiw
