how marshall like are these? i really want to jump on one because i dont ever want to mod my jmp, but i want a modded marshally amp. are they as loud as a real marshall? i currently play a '77 jmp, and a mesa markIII at band practice, and play them loud. other guitarist has a stupid our jcm800 as well. just want to be sure the eggie can hang with that crowd.

thanks for any opinions;
steve

It is a VERY Marshall with more gain. Sounds great and I'm sure you'd dig it. I went to the Seminar and built one and owned it for awhile until I started doing my own thing. For the price I see them used, it is a steal.

I actually did the seminar myself and exactly what Steve said!!!!!!

thanks fellas. glad to hear from men who've done the course, and know a thing or two about marshals.

I sure wish Egnater would do those seminars again. I would sign up in a heart beat.

I just did the seminar in November. It was a great time and I got a great amp out of it. Very Marshall with a kick added by Bruce.

Cool. Last I heard, they were not doing the seminars anymore.

He wasn't for a while, but Bruce held two in November '12. He posted them in the Egnater section of the forum and MTS forum. Definitely worth the time and money, I had a VERY good time and met some cool people I only knew from the forums (MarcoR, Jaded Faith and others).

Here's a bad iPhone pic.

Found some more bad iPhone pics and I'd also like to mention Bruce is a very cool guy.

So how much of that do you do in the class? Is any of it prewired or do you do it all? Do you feel like you could trouble shoot that amp after taking the class?

the preamp circuit values reminds me of an uberschall, but in a 3 gain stages JCM-like form
definitely one of the best amps I've heard around the web
Bruce should sell a cheaper outsourced single channel pcb version of it
I'd pick that over a jet city any day (and I love jet city)

The board is populated prior to class to save time. Other than that you get a few bags of parts and an instruction booklet. Troubleshooting :D ... Funny you ask, my amp (and one other in the class) had a bad preamp tube socket that even Bruce had trouble locating. The class certainly helped me in my troubleshooting ability, but I'm no amp tech - that's for sure. While I was sitting with Bruce as he was trying to find why my amp wasn't working I asked him how I would find the problem. He looked at me and paused, then he said "You wouldn't."

Well... there is a bit more done them that, at least when I did the class. The tube sockets are installed and the heaters and a few other things are wired. The pots have the grounding bar soldered already because you don't get a hot enough Iron to do that. Here is what it looks like when you start. You can see the parts bin with the completed board over to the right.:

Here was mine when I finished:

The best thing about the class is the second day when you learn about how to tweak the amp, how the different subsystems work, etc. It was awesome and I learned a ton, but truthfully most of the guys there had tuned out - they just wanted to build the amp, which is done the first day.

You wouldn't be able to troubleshoot from just the Seminar...

Yes, you are correct. I went to edit my post to and kept getting booted back to the thread without an update. Finally gave up trying.

does anyone know the preamp tube layout? it has four 12ax7's. is the third for the efx loop? also what does the footswitch jack do, and what are your options for power tubes on this bias circuit?? love this amp, but i run more power amp than preamp volume, and would like to experiment with power tubes next.
thanks

steve

I remember seeing someone post a clip of the one they had made on HC years ago and it made me drool! Sounded completely awesome and I get a twitch every once in awhile when I see on for sale.

Bruce's class was great and the second day was the highlight for me. Yes the head has four 12ax7's and the third is for the effects loop. Bruce told us that we could put in any power tubes we wanted. I never used the footswitch jack yet but I believe it's for the clean to dirty switching. The clean tone isn't really a clean channel but it works great. From class, "On this amp, all four tube stages are active when using the HIGH or LOW sensitivity input. 'When plugged into the CLEAN input, the first tube stage is bypassed creating a much lower gain, clean tone"
