Hey Guys.... I'm probably going to stick with my original plan of a good gigging amp / head in solid state, but I've always been a tube guy and some have about convinced me to look again, so here I am..

I'm looking on Sweetwater and I see these Egnator heads.. I'm wondering how good they might be? They have this Rebel 20 watt head that sounds good. Says it' has both EL84's and 6V6 tubes that one can choose the amount of each, etc, and that it works for hi gain and drop tuned hi gain, etc,.

Anyone play one and if so, what did you think of it? Does this company have a good reputation for quality?

Thanks
T

I have no experience with the Rebel, but I had a Tourmaster a while back. I really enjoyed the first two channels..clean and low gain. The low gain channel 2 was definitely where the amp shined to me. I spent most of my time on it. The two high gainers, channels 3 and 4 were good, but didn't really come alive to me. I had no reliability issues with mine in the short time I had it.

Thanks man.. Too many choices anymore. When I was a kid, way back when the dinasours were humping in the night..hehe.. Was two or three amps.. LOL..

bruce has an excellent reputation as an amp builder and designer. there are numerous threads on the forum about his designs. you can use the search function and type in egnater for more info or simply scroll down and go to the egnater section.

I thought the Armageddon was quite good. versatile. Brought the rage too.

Next to the Mark IV, my favorite amp of all time was my Egnater M4 into a Randall stereo power amp. I love those amps. Too bad they've kicked the mod series to the curb.

That's when a little bit of me died! That being said the rebel IMO is probably the most reliable and it's really a mid gainer. With a pedal it can get pretty saturated. The 30 is where I said give me basic clean and a more aggressive gain channel. Renegade is the amp I wanted Bruce to do 20 years ago. Bassman and a hot rod Marshall.
I own all 3 and each is it's own character. I have had no issues with any of them. But they all have suffered from certain issues on each amp except the rebel 20.

I have a mint Renegade head that is very versatile for gigging. As Jeff said, Bassman clean channel and modded Marshall overdrive channel. Each channel has its own TMB as well as volume and gain. Has a loop, and boost and presence and depth controls. Overall I still prefer my old Marshall JCM800 as I don't need the versatility. It's for sale if you are interested. Comes with foot switch and cover.

These amps sound okay in demos, but whenever I've plugged into one myself, whether it's a Tweaker or Armageddon, I've been unimpressed.

the rocktron tol 100 i owned for about a decade was rather wonderful
the TOS (tone of snyder) mod for the high gain channel 4 modes and dave friedman's final touches made it sing.

his modular line is also sweet and i still think the vox module rivals the best old voxes i've heard, and coupled with the two notes stuff you could have all the vintage and modern amp tones you'd ever need.

I think the new modular line is called Synergy and its going to debut @Namm next month .so let's see.

I have had the TOL ,Vendetta and mod stuff, The Egnater tone is great but he build quality of the offshore stuff has been hit and miss

The modular/custom shop stuff is killer and they will even modify the modular stuff to taste. There are several folks that do this, as well.

Buyer beware on the line carried by GC (Made in China). All you have to do is go to the Egnater forum and look at the first two pages. I
can guarantee I will never own a Tourmaster, Renegade, or a Rebel 30. Maybe a Rebel 20 one day.

The modular line has potential -- I hope Bruce & Co. do revisit it and get it together.

Ive got the Egnator TOL Roctron one. Its killer and for sale if you want it
