Any one try both tube types in the JSX? Which did you like better? What were the differences in tone between the 2?

I've only ever used EL34's in mine. No desire to change either. I love the aggressive mids and don't need any added lows as I'm dialing them back as it is already.

I suspect the change will be less mids, and a smoother tone with 6L6's.
I may try them one day, but not at the top of my list of things to do.

I preferred it with 6L6's...just had overall more beef. More low end and just a bigger thicker sound but still had more than enough grind...the 6's didn't smooth it out any to my ears. But that was many amps ago and my experience. Great amp though...my fav Peavey amp.

I hated the EL34's in that amp. 6L6's were a major improvement but it still no matter what pre or power tubes I put in it still had a nasally tone that I couldnt jive with

COol. I might try 6l6s. I really love the JSX. Its been a while since Ive been gassing for one, but the other guitarist in my band has one. Im not selling my 6505 for it, but itll be VERY nice to have both, and to have an actual clean channel.

I had one for about 2 years and I liked mine best with KT-77's (by far) .
it killed the nasally mids that EL-34's can give this amp (although mine di not have them), yet also gave it some of the thick chunk that 6L6's give it.
Trhwo a 10 band EQ in the loop and slightly boost the lower mids and slightly cut the upper mids a little bit and you can get a nice thick tight tone out of it..

Did you have to upgrade the screen resistors to put kt77s in it? Ill keep that in mind about the eq. Thanks!!

no , no need to , just make sure you are in EL34 mode if you use them.

This. The xxx was greater imo.

Hmm. Ive heard a lot of people say this before, but I havent had that problem.

Ive played the xxx numerous times and never liked it as much as the JSX. Ill have to track one down and give it another shot. If all else fails, I can just sell it and keep looking lol, but I dont really see that happening. I just really love the tone of that amp.

my sentiments exactly.

I dug 6L6s in that amp a lot more. Sounded bigger and fatter to me that way. I gigged out quite a bit with that amp when I had it and always got a lot of compliments on the tone.

I never had a problem crafting a solid tone out of the amp. I could work around the nasal mids easily. The right Phase Inverter tube make a world of difference.
A dry sounding pickup that has a naturally flat eq is also a key to success with this amp.

HIt up GREAZYGEO.
He gigged out with the JSX a while back. Cover band I blieve.
I remember him saying he ran it with 6L6's I believe.

PM him

While I liked the JJ El34... the JJ KT 77 WERE THE BOMB !!!!!!! you have a nice low-end, more upper frequencies, but it's not annoying/harsh... more spectum.

Seriously try it, it was worth it !!

I was about to try some KT88 but they won't fit.....

BTW: I did almost only play the ultra channel gain around 75%, never the crunch or clean..

I switched to SED Winged C 6L6's in my JSX. I thought the tone was greatly improved. Then clean channel seemed fuller and the crunch channels also had more oomph. Since then, I have used Winged C's in all my amps. I put them in my Dual Rec, and now I have a set of 6550's in my 1970 Marshall. Great tubes, give em a try!! My only suggestion with the JSX is to bias it with a probe, rather than the test points. Its more accurate that way.

Yeah, if I try some 6l6s, Im definitely going with winged C. Laura hooked me up with a pair she had lying around for my 6505 combo, and it never sounded better, so that would definitely be my route. I have a bias probe, so when I do switch the tubes, Ill be good to go!!

the biggest improvement of any of the peavey high gainers is to bias it to with in range,...thou you wont be able to do it with the factory bias adjustment,....for some reason pevey sends out all there amps ice cold,...i tried all of the above mentioned tubes in a xxx and always went back to the 6l6's,...with the bias adjustment set to el34 mode,..and @ 100% of the knob...after this,..your preaMP tube swaps will be alot more noticeable for fine tuning,..
