so i'm back to using the eleven rack tonight as my wife is watching tv in my bedroom/batcave/studio and i can't turn on the Carvin stack. at first i'm hating my world because it just don't feel right. then i get the idea to challenge myself to a new preset that captures the essence of the Carvin. radical eq is used, compressor added after the amp...and then something happened...i just kept playing my guitar! ahhhhhhhh, feels much better. not exactly perfect, but at least fun to jam on and more in-the-room sounding.

then i was listening to some old Van Halen Balance cd....Amsterdam comes on, a light bulb goes off in my head, and i decide to morph the Carvin preset into a EVH balance cd preset. more even more radical eq tweaks ensue, then i got into the ballpark. in the ballpark is when i can play along with the cd and sound like a second EVH track. it is not perfect, but close enough to enjoy.

if you have an eleven rack, here are the presets:

How 'bout a clip of it for us without an 11 rack? ;)

Singtall's presets are always good. I wish I had that ability.

sorry it took so long to reply...i went through several revision of the preset before i arrived at what i now have (which ain't quite there yet either).

a guy sent me a sample of a new 5150 III direct out with no cabinet sims to work with. please excuse both of our playing, we didn't intend for this to be heard by anyone but us. the eleven rack effects and mixing options prevent me from being able to pan the guitar dry tone left and the delay right like the cd, but i did what i could with a chorus and delay. i think the modelling of amps is it's strong point, but the effects fall a mile short of the axe-fx.....but you get what you pay for.

here are some examples of what i've been working on:

first i took a raw wav file from an actual 5150 III head direct out without cabinet sims, then i played it through the eleven rack EVH Balance preset, but i turned the eleven rack amp model off so that what you hear is the real 5150 III head played with a strat w/ dimarzio chopper pickup, through the eleven rack cab sims and effects.

then i played my strat with EMG SA single coil through the EVH Balance preset with amp modelling on:

and just to show how much difference pickups make on the eleven rack, i tried the same thing again using humbuckers (you can hear much more distortion):

here is the actual preset:

here is an example of the preset, using a strat with EMG SA's in a mix:

i learned some of Amsterdam by Van Halen and played with the new preset and i have to say i'm pretty stoked at this point. i also tried different amp models and none of them are close to the right tone or feel....that surprised me big time. who would have thought the modern rectifier would yield that kind of tone?

since redoing the preset, i recorded another clip to showcase the new tone, this was done with my purple strat w/ humbuckers using the new preset:

hmmmm, nothing but crickets here. lol. i guess if it ain't tubes it ain't worth commenting on.

Hey, what's going on? Just FYI, a few of your links were dead. I was able to listen to two of them though.

Your tone is in the ballpark but there is alot more you could do to get closer to Eddie's tone in my opinion. Here is just a few things I noticed but keep in mind that I'm hearing your clips thru computer speakers. I don't have an Eleven Rack so take my comments with a grain of salt. :)

Chorus:
The first thing you need is more chorus. Eddie's tone was really thick with chorus back then.

Reverb: I would add a touch of reverb, like maybe a "Hall" or something to get that studio magic tone in there.

Bass:
Something sounded a bit muddy. Not sure if it was too much bass or not enough definition but definitely a touch too boomy.

Gain:
Sounds like a bit too much gain. Not sure how easy it would be to turn the gain down and still get some good sustain. Again, I don't have an Eleven Rack so can't really comment on what exactly to tweak.

i believe you are right on with the comments. i will make some adjustments and try it again. thanks for the input.

i was actually trying to make a "Balance" cd preset, but then i played "humans being" from the movie "twister"....and i wasn't sure if they even sounded the same...and top it all off i played in E standard....duh.

back to work i go...

Not very close IMO. A good part of the sound is the Eventide H3000 as well.

This. ^^^

To the OP, it won't be chorus, it'll be pitch shift (detune) that you need more of. I would imagine the patch has this feature; this is what you should look to tweak -- adding chorus will only get you further away.

Not bad though!

the eleven rack doesn't have a pitch shifter nor harmonizer available. i'm using a slow chorus to widen it and a delay to slap back on one side....that's about all i can do effects wise. but i can tweak the amp model more and get it sounding tonally closer.

Agreed! I'll tell you though - the Eventide PitchFactor pedal does the signature H3000 micropitchshift sound in spades. I just got one to use in my rig when I want that sound and it is KILLER! Sounds exactly like the stereo micropitchshift from my old H3000-DSX. Great pedal and worth the $425 I paid for it...

It actually isn't detune only. It is stereo micropitchshift in a W/D/W setup. Center cab dry from amp. Run line out from amp into Eventide Pitchfactor or an H3000 and set that for +9 cents shift L with 500ms delay and -9 cents shift R with 250ms delay. Out from the effects to stereo power amp and left and right cabs. Mix to suit your ears for the Balance sound by adjusting the amount of wet and dry signal. You'll get it dead on with a good gainy amp.

Ed even did this in the studio and mic'd all three cabs...

I tried this with the Axe-FX micropitchshifting and other rack units, but there is something different about the Eventide algorithms that adds more clarity, chime and thickness to the sound.

My 3 cents... :D
