The Modena is really a cool amp, but it does have a somewhat modern voicing to it - very hard to explain but to compare it to an Uberschall is not a stretch. It certainly does not have that 'give' of a Marshall melting down. I liked the one I had for a long time and then its voicing just wore on me and I couldn't un-hear the things I disliked about it anymore, if that makes sense.

FWIW I've had the M60, M90, about 7 Camerons, 2 SLO's, etc, etc...

Very true about the voicing, they really have their own thing going on....oddly enough, I liked channel 1 boosted better than channel 2. Very weird for me, because I'm definitely more of a high gain guy.

I'm new here but I have experience with both of these amps. They aren't that far apart in terms of sound although the M90 is definitely more versatile. My SLO has the depth mod done along with KT66's and the bottom end of the 2 amps is almost identical. If I had to pick one only, it would probably be the M90 because is is definitely more versatile but that being said, SLO's have a very distinctive lead sound that seems to cut through the mix really well whether it be in a live situation or in studio.

Thanks! My SLO is #008 and was made in Jan 87 for the 87 Namm Show. It has a slightly different signal routing and a tiny bit more gain than the later ones. It also has chrome tranformers and a chrome metal logo. It's the one that you've seen in all the magazines for Soldano ads for so many years. I bought off Aldo Nova in 1988.
I'll be demoing Wizards this year in their booth at Namm.

;) What's up bud? You done trying the Splawns? I still have my very first one, but sold my last one. I figure one is enough. Hey did you ever get any 411 on the missing Quickrod? I read all the back and forth BS the other guy was posting. Looked aggrivating. So I 'm off for now, nice amp list sure enough!

Let me know if you decide on the Soldano. I have a friend who has one that is less than a year old and has all of the factory mods - dead mint. I'm going to help him sell it when I get back in town next week. It will probably be offered at a pretty good price.

The QR showed up at his door a couple of days late that's all. He had my PayPal account frozen and all types of other aggravation. The amp was never scanned by us CUSTOMS or USPS, that's all.
I'm done with the Splawns for now. The Wizard does the "Marshall on steroids" thing even better than the Splawn and I found the QR noisy. I'm really likeing the M90 ! Used it in studio for the 1st time today and it really shined on all fronts!

Hey bud, I did not say what you have posted . You have Johnny's quote in a box with my name on it. No biggie just thought I would clarify.

Yeah man, the wizards are the bomb. I love them amps. They are just SOO PRICEY. Worth it but still a touch painful for some to pay for . So did teh guy end up keeping the quickrod after all his over reacting?

I've been looking at Elmwood and Soldano (Avenger) myself, but my playing goes more towards black/death/folk metal rather than hard rock. I love the thick sound of these heads, but I'm wondering if the Elmwood – especially the softer voiced m60 – and Avenger/SLO can really pull off more extreme metal.

You might want to check if these heads can pull off heavy and punchy sounds; while they will have enough gain, they might be a bit "round" sounding for very aggressive styles. Anyway, that's my fear, you would have to check for yourself if it fits your playing style.

I've tried an Elmwood M90 & 3100. You are 100 % right; plenty of gain but too round sounding for all out hyper aggressive metal tones.

that rythem has a lot of potential,

I'm not as fond of the lead tone. The SLO beats it IMO

Hmmm...I bought that exact amp from Andy (the fellow who made that video), I mean that very M90 in the video. I ended up trading it for a VHT Ultralead plus cash, and I am very happy with the trade as the UL has become one of my favorite amps, but the M90 was cool, just IMO not quite worth its price tag.

Yah He kept the QR. :gethim: Ya ... Wizards ARE the bomb!! They are built to outlast both you are I put together!! I don't know if you are aware of it but the co-owner and founder of Wizard amps has been the guitar tech for AC/DC for the last 26 years. He's on the road with them now on the new tour! They are REALLY something special. Yes they are pricey but have you ever seen the inside of one?

:) No I have never gotten the chance to see one at all. But Josh Sage say's they are one of the loudest amps ever.  And he say's the same thing, that they are very, very well built.
