Hey guys,

I need a little help. The EMG 81 in the bridge of my Epi Les Paul squeals at louder volumes when i stop playing (almost microphonic sounding). When it's squealing the pickup itself is vibrating and if i put my finger on it to stop the vibrating the squealing stops. Any one ever experience anything like this with EMG's? Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

All my other guitars are very quiet at the same volume.....it's really weird.

I know exactly what you're talking about, and I believe it's caused by the pickup springs.
I'm not exactly sure what the cure is, but possible replacing the pickup springs with small pieces of rubber tubing may help.

Put a piece of foam behind the pup and your problem is solved. :thumbsup:

Awesome, I'll try the foam first! Should i really pack it into the pickup cavity.....seems like there is an excessive amount of space there.....

Just enough to put a little pressure on the back of the pup. I usually just use the foam that comes in the pup boxes.

So, i packed some foam behind the pickup, replaced the springs with rubber tubing and i still get the squealing. It stops if i touch the pickup though......grounding issue maybe? I also swapped the 81 in the bridge for an 85 just in case the 81 was defective in any way and the 85 squeals like the 81. I'm a little stumped now......

Is it packed enough to put some pressure on the backside of the pup? Put some more if needed. Otherwise, turn down the gain. :yes:

It's not a grounding issue, because EMGs are in plastic cases.
Plastic = non-conductive.
