Eminence Speakers

So many of these have caught my eye lately.

GB12
V12
Legend 1258
Legend 1275
Texas Heat

I’m wanting to do a top/bottom setup with 2x EVM12L classics

I’m leaning towards Texas Heats but request input from others who’ve more experience with eminence than I do.

Ideally I’m planning to order two empty Splawn straight cabs again. They’re beefy enough to handle the abuse.
 
I have used 12” legends and 15” legends, Ms-12’s, mc-90’s and man-o-wars… I liked them all..especially the Ms-12’s….. I believe the mc-90’s were made by them anyway. If you could find a pair of those they pair perfectly with ev’s…that is “the” combo in the old metal grill mesa cabinets. And those are my favorite cabinets ever…
 
Buddy of mine has Krank cab with Texas heats and I like it. It has massive bottom end, relatively flat midrange and smooth highend. K100 is most similar speaker from Celestion line.
In general the Emi speaker sound a little bit flat or 'papery' to me. They are usually smoother sounding than Celestions but doesn't have THAT midrange crunch and lively response like Cel. do.
 
V12's are great for clean cleans and brutal high gain; kinda ass for anything in between IMO
 
Only have experience with Texas Heats and V12's from Krank cabs.

Both horrible, but that's JMO.

Texas Heats are unusably dark and have got kind of a honky midrange. People often complain of how aggressive the presence is on the Krankenstein, but if you play that cab, you can kinda tell why they voiced it that way. Like no top-end detail at all. Sounds like I'm exaggerating, but the EQ on those speakers is really that drastic.

V12's somehow manage to sound both dark and fizzy at the same time. Kind of if you scooped all the cutting high mids of a V30 and moved them up the spectrum to where they just become fizz. It also has kind of a hollow-sounding midrange that I could swear almost sounds like you had two mics slightly out of phase with each others even when you mic them with a single mic.

Don't recommend either.

I have some Swamp Thangs, they are nice.

Very focused bass. A bit more harmonic content in the upper frequencies, compared to anything else I have tried. This may be both good and bad.

They really show how good an amp is, or isn't.

But mine are just now getting broke in, as I have been doing lots of cab swapping lately.

Don't know if any of this helps.
 
V12 was great after broken in. I found that eminence not broken in to be the worst sound ever lol . But later they are great
 
For me, the thing with Eminence is they can be made to sound ok in the room, but really fall apart under the mic. I don't know if the SM57 is just not the right mic to use with them, but I mean, it's not like 57 doesn't work well with a very wide variety of other speakers.

I'll admit I've not mic'd a wide variety of their models first hand, but they all really share that characteristic with most of the clips I hear of them.

I have cv-75 and kv-77 in my 1960B cab. I prefer the CV-75. They have a nice natural compression and very balanced tone. Super easy to record too.
 
As far as I know, CV-75's and the Mick Thomson speakers have Kurt Mueller cones. So that might explain why those kinda stick out on clips. To me, at least.
 
I'm really not a big eminence fan in general, but there have been a handful I thought were decent to great.

The mick thomson dv 77 is really good, for metal and hard rock tones, and the manowars are really good for clean and doom tones

I really don't like the Texas Heat, GB12, or V12, and the legend series might be my least favorite speaker of all time

The swamp thang is fine for like a fender amp or something but I don't like it for anything gainy
 
I have had V12s and the stock GFlex speakers for years and always liked them. I want to try more Eminence speakers. I really want to try the Swamp Thangs, and possibly X with Governors.

What I notice with the ones I have, is that the Eminences seem to have deeper, cleaner bass, and less mid fizz than Celestions.

I also think the Eminences I have heard kind of have that 'off-axis' sound to them.

I like it though. It cuts down on the harsh fizzy mids Celestions have.
 
I mean this sounds pretty damn good to me? I really dislike the top end of Celestion offerings for the super high gain and honestly don’t get the hype of red backs or GK100s.

I’m thinking Legend 1218’s X CV-75?

 
The 1258s are probably my most used speaker over time. They actually remind me of a v30 with a compressor.

I don't like the RBs or GKs by themselves, but they tend to fill out the range when mixed with others, imo.
Though I do use them by themself, just not for guitars.
