+1 man

i have been looking silently and observing the used market for about a year now, comparing cabinets like the hiwatts, splawns, thd, randall, more recently VHT's, custom audio electronics, camerons, the list goes on and on. Engl's came out on top, splawns second. However i saw almost no engl cabinets go for sale, and most of those that own them now had to purchase new.

they hold their value great, and the cabinet cases will prevent any dings, so its a wise investment IMHO - hopefully the stars will align and i can do this, keep your fingers crossed

He kick's Ass!! Bought my
last Engl Pro 4X12 from him.

I couldn't agree more on your opinion
of the Engl Pro Cabs. I've owned Marshall's, Orange,
Mesa's, Custom Audio, Randall, Laney, Splawn, Soldano
and the Engl's Crushed them all, not even a close
contest as far as I am concerned.
I will own my Engl's untill the end!!
I have tried to convince many people on
this Forum and anyone else that will listen,
how killer these cabs are. I'm done pumping
them, you either get it or you don't......

i totally forgot about your setup with the engl's and wizards

any particular reason you went with slants? i am having a hard time deciding on slant/straight, straights only, or two slants.

the benefits at practice with at least one slant is the ability to hear yourself clearer, but two straights since they are not XXL's would probably add more solidity to the mix since the speakers are V30's and already mid based and cut through the mix?

I don't doubt that these are good cabs but has anyone identified what makes them better? Different construction or materials? What speakers are loaded up in them?

they are front loaded and have the most projection of any other cabinet in its place - it makes for a very resonate but projective tone out of your speakers. the XXL's tend to have a swallowed up type of attitude - like the low end gets muffled by the cabinet due to its sheer size.

they use russian siberian birch in the entire cabinet in the pro series, the standard series uses MDF for the cabinet and russian siberian birch for the baffle only, which is why they do not have the same projection or resonate tone as the pro series.

plus they are built like brick shithouses, never heard a person complain about engl build quality on their cabinets or their joints

What speakers does Engl load in the cabs and how much do they typically run?

either greenbacks or V30's for the pro models, V60's for the standard series made with MDF board.

i hate speaker distortion, so i am choosing V30's, also V30 cabinets are a bit less expensive, but thats not why i am chosing them. the best pricing i have seen so far is guitar asylum with free shipping on any order $300 or more and they are 1250 a piece. (2500 for both) but i have not spoken to anyone just yet to see if there is anything that can be done if i purchase two - it never hurts to ask :)

I love the slant's for a number of reasons.
I always have a dual amp rig, one Engl Pro
for each head. My current rig setup is a Bogner
Uberschall Twin Jet and a incoming Cameron CCV.
Can't wait to hear this incarnation!!

At practice I prefer the slant's due to their
sound projection. I can hear what each amp
is doing and I can dial it in accordingly.
With straight cabs, the sound is like a straight
lazer beam that blew ear drums apart for whoever was
unfortunate enough to be sitting in front of its path.
I don't need full stacks for what I do, the
2 slants are plenty thick and loud enough for what I
need.

Didn't Diezel do front loaded cabs too?

It is not just about the front loaded design, the dimensions are not the same, nor do engls have front grill cloth covers. the sounds of an Engl cannot be replicated, their value has always been respectable and always in high demand, and their build quality is rock solid with a reputation that backs their pricing. I also refuse to own anything with Diezel or Cameron on the front of it :)

I always point the straight cabinets offset to wherever i am standing -likewise for gigs as well - always like standing offset to my cabinets when i play and never directly in front of them, just sounds better :dunno:

i like having one slant and one straight for this reason, i normally put the straight towards my drummer and the slant for me, or both of them slightly inward of one another facing a direction where i am not standing, always sounded good to me

I know the XXL may not be your thing but damn do I love mine. It projects better than any cab I have owned and I have owned a shitload. It also sounds better than anything I have tried with the exception of the Mills I just picked up. I have yet to do a side by side comparison due to the fact that one is at the practice space and the other is at my house.

I did the pepsi challenge with my pro cab stacked up against my VHT and my front load Diezel(all loaded with V30's). My buddy had 3 gigs lined up and his cab went down so I offered up mine. I got to hear them all from a listeners perspective and that Engl slayed them all. It literally filled the venue with it's wholesome goodness. :D I am not sure if it's the front load/grill/material that makes the difference or the combination of all that with the wood used. :dunno: All I know is that cab sounds killer with no matter what head I am using.

It's a heavy mofo too. It tops the scales at 138lbs.

I had to buy mine new but got a good deal from a place that was not going to sell Engl anymore so I saved around $300. They never seem to come up used. Looked for a year before buying new. That has got to say something.

Maybe someday I could hear the difference between the pro and the XXL pro but for now I am pretty darn happy.

They are great cabs no doubt

I had 2 brand new pro series vintage bottom cabs that I bought at dealer blow out NIB for $500 ea.

I used them here and there at shows but I honetly thought the front loaded v30's sounded very harsh fizzy and bright in those cabs. Especially with out any grill cloth to tame the high end.

I by far dug my VHTs for projection and punch in live settings by a long shot over the Engls

Check out Chuck Levin's in Wheaton, MD. I deal with Paul Schein there. They have numerous Engl pieces on the floor and tend to have huge inventory.

About a year ago I did a mini metal amp shootout to see if my recently acquired Marsha was worth keeping since I was a big fan of the Splawn Quickrod and ENGL Savage (FWIW, the Marsha was a cut above those others IMO as well as for the other guys there, but those other amps are still killer). For cabs we used two ENGLs (a pro and an xxl), a Splawn, a Recto, a Marshall (T75), and a 5150III. The ENGL pro and Splawn stole the show with different people preferring each of them, but everybody agreed they were #1 and #2 regardless of the order. The pro sounded better in every way over the xxl...really no comparison. It's easily one of the best 4x12s on the market IMO for a tight, aggressive tone.

Here's a phone pic from that evening...I can't remember which ENGL cab that is but I think its the pro (the others are off to either side).
