I played one at Messe.

Meh.

Compressed and totally undynamic. Attack was slow and no punch. Maybe the right sound for some but to me this was a lame amp. I guess it has small tranformers, that's what it sounds like at least.

Thats about what i expected, i dont think its a amp i would like, i used to dig the pbv1 and v2 but my ears changed and i dont like them anymore, give me a blackmore over a pb anyday.

I cannot tell you how many time I've read where people much prefer the RB over the other Engl amps. I gotta try one of these. Is the RB like the Savage 120? Because I much prefer the PB to the Savage 120.

Jim

Hey Jim - I have a bunch of clips of the Blackmore doing different things (rock, bluesy, metal) in my sig. I think the Blackmore has really good mid gain tones. Ch. 3 is pretty badass if you ask me. And channel 4 is pure  .

My opinion is that they totally FUBAR'd the look of the powerball II. The big chrome emblem and front plate on the older PB is badass. I love the way my PB sounds, heavy as it gets.

played the 1st version...never got to play the latest version yet..Im hoping to sometime though, so im not much help.Although the powerball wasnt my favorite amp, I think it has its place.

I had my PB v2 for about 3 weeks. I hated it. It was bright, highly compressed signal. It didn't "breathe" like an amp should. Very sterile. I've had many Engl's, and I find I don't like most of them, except maybe the Thunder/Screamer stuff because they were simple, they ripped when dimed and just seemed have more mojo.

tone wise i prefer the fireball 60 over the powerball, invader 100 over the fireball, savage over the invader 100, and a VH4 over them all.

blackmore is nothing more than a fine tuned savage. both great amplifiers. each of the engl's have their place. the only one i found to liking the clean on though was the powerball from the clips i could find.

Every time I hear a clip of ENGL they seem to have a " graininess " to them in OD and Hi Gain that may be good for metal, but not for other styles.

The little Gigmaster 15 watt head actually sounded smooth in clips and I know their more expensive Preamps ( not the 500$ one) can do warm smooth tones but I'm not familiar with their entire line.

I'm sure they have some Amps that are smooth- which ones ? Any NOT made for Metal that are smooooth ?

I've played hundreds of amps and the Savage 120 is top dog for my tone. High gain of course, but Engls are super versatile and are the best amps I've played, personally.
