ENGL Powerball?

use the search feature for ENGL - the powerball has been mentioned many, many, many times in those conversations.

regardless - i prefer the savage 120 and fireball 60 flavors.

i used to prefer the powerball tone, because it gave a more german type of engl tone which fit the progressive metal tone i was searching for back then, but i've grown not to like it at all and went to the hot rodded SLO/marshall tone.

people have also said it plays very compressed in a bad way as well - the powerball.

also - engl tones are like flavors of soda. its still carbonated water, just different flavors and tastes for your preference. you cant go wrong with any of them technically speaking.

it should also be mentioned of ENGL quality......im sure others who have owned engl's will bring this up as well.

BTW - everything i have mentioned has already been said in the forum - just search away and you will find all of the topics and discussions.

Savage 120 owns it. If it didn't, I wouldn't have bought a Savage over a Powerball for my reamping business ;)

Funny. Years ago I A/B'd the Savage 120 and Powerball and much preferred the Powerball. I owned the PB for about a year, which for me is pretty good.

Sorry I'm so used to HCAF not having a working search function, thanks for all the info. :)

I like the Blackmore/Savage better. Had my Blackmore for a few years and I love it. Have had many nice amps, but the Blackmore is still here.

They are both good. I like the savage a little more due to the bigger fuller 3-D sound and the gain sounds more smooth and a little less fizzy.

This. I never had a problem with the ENGL head I owned for two years.

ask zombieland. or search the forum for the words zao powerball warranty or zombieland powerball warranty

romeo never gigged his ENGL's (starting out) for this reason as well. its the whole reason you saw line6 heads behind him instead of the ENGL's.

later on he took 2 for his rig, and had a few backup models. all of them in roadcases.

some dealers are not giving a shit about ENGL anymore due to customer centricity issues, and dropping support. i have read dealers giving stupid good deals on their remaining inventory because of customer service choices made by the company, or overall warranty service, and just refusing to handle the ENGL name after it.

zombieland had a huge throwdown happen with his models, PM him for the details and you can search for all of this on the forum.

as they say if you go looking for trouble, you will find it. so it does no good to google such a topic because thats all you will find - the negatives. but its been brought up in this forum for a long time.

its also one of the minor reasons i didnt trade my 5150 for an invader 100 a few months ago.

I have never had a problem with any of the ones ive owned. :dunno:

yeah theres alot of people that have NOT had problems with their models, but im not speaking on their behalf. i can recall enough instances that it needs to be mentioned - just like i said in the first post. im not saying deny ENGL all together because of a few bad apples, but the bad apples i have read about and the remaining treatment of the company was pretty fucking shitty.

i wouldnt buy an ENGL new except from musiciansfriend for their return policy, because anything else will get you screwed and are asking for trouble.

buying used helps as well.

hell, i can remember lolzgreg selling a savage120 in the classifieds that had a huge problem and he bought it like that, and didnt even know something was wrong with it. he had to buy another model just to get that one fixed with a tech.

its more obvious than you think.....

Yeah, I kept the bad Savage after it was fixed and just sold the perfectly working one. Engls are hit or miss. You're actually better off buying used from a trusted source (me in this case, since every amp I own sees a tech for a general check-over and re-tube as soon as I get it).

By the way Matt, I had the grounding reference completely reconfigured for the Savage, and now it is the absolute quietest amp I own.

My powerball had a small inline resister or diode thingy-ma-bob that burnt causing the amp's power tube monitoring system to shut off power tube 3. Had it fixed and that has been my only problem. I'd buy another ENGL in a heartbeat.

They also say the Mesa rectifier solo heads are a very reliable amp, yet both Dual recs I've had have had problems too. Again, I'd buy another dual rec in a heartbeat if I wanted to.

My point is, stuff breaks down, no biggie. :)

I had 2 PBs over the course of 5 years. 1 from US and 1 from Japan. Never had a problem with them at all and they got gigged regularly.

The one thing I did notice about the PB (and could be the source of some negative reviews) was that it was very picky when it came to speaker/cabs. Sounded very thin with Marshall cabs (V30s), sounded great with H&K cab (V30s) and Peavy cab (Sheffields), and sound full and powerful with Vader cab (Eminence), but when match to a ENGL Pro cab it just killed. Big, full, powerful, and articulate.

I have heard this too. Sounds great with the mode 4.
