Was flipping through some amp sims on an Axe FX and came across the ENGL Powerball. Feck me running that amp had a nice sounding, heavy bottom. Don't see ENGL's talked about too much around around here. If they are anything like their German counterparts at Diezel and Bogner, they are impressive. They have the new E635 Fireball coming out soon which looks to be a stripped down Powerball. Long story short, I have got to have one  . Order in through Josh at Rebel Amps. They are voiced around 6L6 tubes but I hope they don't sound too much like a Mesa DR. The clips seems to have mucho bottom end, where the Mesa doesn't.

Any Powerball users with some opinions?

It's that darn gas again isn't it   . I did not like the power ball,But I did like the fireball much more of a raw sound a little more open sounding not quite as compressed. What does a new 100 watt fireball go for $.

The powerball is a nice amp just not for me I think that engl makes great stuff..Hey it's German that being said ,says it all...

blackmore has been my fav amp so far

have owned and sold the following
1. TSL100
2. 5150
3. Uberschall

the engl just had the better tone for me

the only other amp i have some sort of interest in right now is a Cobra

Frickin gas! I was actually checking them out a little when Elmo came along. The thing about the ENGL Fireball is the price - $1700. Sold....

i love the powerball. funny you talk about the bottom end, you get people saying it gets muddy when recording or its a bad amp in a live situation, now i only jammed on one so i can't comment about either. although the guy that said this also said the 5150 has too much mids when set to 0. yes 0.

im a engl fan and i also love the powerball, i have one coming this week. i had a couple powerballs over the years and its a amp that i feel good playing and its simple, i had a couple engl se and its my fav amp engl makes but right now i just want something more simple like the pb. if i was in a band i would rather have the engl se, or a blackmore since they cut thru better and have more mids, i also owned the morse, invader 100 and 150 and savage 120. engl makes nice amps and i like them better than the diezels i owned for tones.

I used to own a Powerball. To me if you want a ultra high gain amp there something to consider. I always thought of Engle's as 5150's with much better tone.

I loved my first series fireball, I used to jam with a dude with a 6505+, they don't sound much alike. Very different voicing. The fireball just gets retardedly brutal when you down tune also.

My only experience with engl is with the Powerball. My friend has one and it's fantastic sounding IMO. It got really good when he put some winged c's in the power section along with an RFT and some other NOS tubes in the pre. We did some side by side comparisons with a Herbert, OD100 Std, and Uber. I thought it hung with them just fine. I've heard it live a bunch too and it never had a problem cutting.

I don't like the Powerball at all. The mid voicing sucks on it IMO and it just sounds way too digital and compressed. The Blackmore sounds a million times better to me.

I really dug the PB everytime I played them for what they are, stupid industrial type tones with a ton of compression. Would not be my number one choice today though due to the amount of compression.

i love my powerball and there is no way in the world i'll ever be selling that amp, period. i haven't even played around with anything but the stock power and preamp tubes but they still sound great even after almost two years of regular use.
one of my favorite things about the amp is that i can use it in my apartment and it sounds killer at low bedroom volumes but when you crank it, it only gets better.

here's a link to a song i wrote and recorded for an old band i was in and we used my gibson les paul with EMG 81/60 combo straight into the powerball using a mesa 4x12 cab
https://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... tent=music

it's the first song at the top and i was fairly impressed with how it handled the style of music.

Nice tune and tone dude. Very Chevel'ish! Good job and thanks for the clip.

My only amp is a powerball and I have been satisfied with it for 5~6 years. I find it to be extremely versatile and especially like running on the clean channel with a fuzz-type pedal. Some say that the crunch channel stops just short of getting the classic 80's style sound, but I like it because it responds to your pick attack and volume knob very well.

Have had a Blackmore for almost 3 years and it ain't going anywhere. I have owned a Powerball and an Invader and the Blackmore smoked both of them for my style.

I am very intrigued by the Fireball 100 and will most likely get one.

I love my Powerball and my SE. I played out with my Powerball and almost every show, someone would ask about the head and tell me that it sounded awesome. To me, it is the perfect blend of Mesa depth/thickness, with Marshall growl and edge. I jammed with a guy a few months back and let him use my Powerball, he was a big Marshall fan and he was ready to trade me his DSL on the spot for it. I laughed and said no thanks, but he told me that it was the Marshall sound that he had been looking for.

It is full of win.

It figures a thread like this would pop up just as I had been reading about Powerballs and Engl's in general.

I haven't had a new amp in years... and the PB sounds like something I'd really like.

Damn, I'm gassing for one now.
