There is a bunch of these out there; 50wt, 100wt, master, no master, year of production ....OMG!

Are there any significant differences between these? The models with master, how loud you really need to get with these to get them sound good? Or perhaps it's better to go with no master combined with UA?

Rough simplistic summary: There's a lot of different variations. Early Non Masters (67 and later, before that they were JTM's) were the 1959 and the 1987 100 and 50 watt amps. They were the "Plexi's" in mid '69 they chaned the plexi panels to Aluminum face plates. In 71 they changed the board a little, and the volume taper is quite a bit different they're more like a switch than a volume knob. Mid 73 they changed over to PCB from PTP, and in '74 I've heard they changed the transformer to lower the plate voltage for less headroom so they'd break up easier. In '75 they started making the Master Volume JMP's the 2203 and 2204. '76 they changed the cosmetics to the larger logo elephant tolex etc. In '81 they changed again to the JCM 800 cosmetics.

They are loud. Even the Master volume amps need to be turned up somewhat to get them sounding great, but not as high as the Non Masters. The Master Volume amps also have more gain, but a slightly different tone and feel as well. They take pedals better than any amp ever made IMHO so even at lower volumes/gigging volumes a good OD like the OCD or TS variations get them sounding great.

Attenuators do work well at taming them, but I don't think they're good at getting a 50 or 100 watt amp down to bedroom levels.

That's what I was afraid of. I really want a JMP with Freidman's mod to complete my amp collection, but I'm afraid it's too loud for my 10'x12'x7.5' room.

Here is a 100w '79 JMP dimed. It has 6550's (which I don't care for) in this clip, but is currently being switched over to EL34's. It has a MV, but of course that's on 10, too.

A bit brite, but I couldn't listen to it in the same room (too loud), so that's what I got.....

Fucken nice!

Going to my friends tonight, he's got a JMP, gonna hopefully bring back some clips with it and a plank cranker and a ts808

There are huge differences in tone from amp to amp. They are pretty clean, even with a master volume, unless they've been modded. They are cool, but I prefer modern amps.

got to love them all, will need to boost to go over the top with any non modded amp

Nice one bob!

Fuck yeah!!! rocking

What about the bloody murder clip.. post that too

It probably will be too loud. If you're looking for low volume stuff, like you mentioned in your e-mail, look at the Naylor amps. They have awesome master volumes.

Thanks man. Those are the BM clips.

Its the only rock amp i play. I have 4 heads..
1978 50w jmp
1979 100w jmp
1982 100w JCM800, which is essentially a JMP master circuit
1974 JMP 50w non-master

I went through the stages of modding some of these back in the day, but brought them all back to stock with some voicing tweaks here and there and effects loop additions.

You're gonna know when someone's plays a strat vs. a humbucker axe right away because of the classic marshall character. Push the fromt end with the OD pedal of your choice, and you're off!

One of the reasons why i like stock, is that i can use my volume knob on guitar to get clean sound that dosent get muddy or loose character. If i wanted a one trick pony, i'd probably have a really good tech that knows what to do to get the heavy sound I want. But really, i can achieve both with the basics. I do like the Friedman sounds and what Bob posted as well because it still sounds like a Marshall vs. other amp modders out there.

good luck

Savage's 6 string clip has been one of my favorite master volume Marshall tones ever. That is so old school sounding, I love it

+1 :worship:

cool! great tone.
Thanks...there are things I don't like about it, but with some tweaks it should be better. I hate the ghost notes!!!! Hopefully some Uli tones are in there :)

I just recently put my 69 plexi back to stock. It was giving me the same tone as what I get from my Wizard stuff, so thought it would come in handy to have a stock amp tone too....now to do the 69 metalface....

How hard was it to put in an effects loop? Did you buy a kit or just do everything from scratch?
