EP3+Variac=Artificial Double Tracking

So I was thinking about the variac I've had for years and never used bc we all know that Ed used that on his amps but I was wondering about the motor on his echoplex. He stated that he used it on the echo in the bomb but I recall he had two EP3 on stage so I figured there may be a reason not understood like the first would double and the longer repeat for the second EP3. After hearing this effect on a vocal track I'm convinced this was the reason for the two, three counting the one in the bomb.

For a touring rig it makes sense that his rig changed later but for us noobs at home I see it being a tone chase to be used at home. Have a listen and imagine the voice using the guitar...

the second EP3 in EVH's rig was most likely for his backup rig, the echo unit in the 'bomb' was a Univox EC-80 and only plugged in for the Eruption solo to get the self oscillating ending

I've heard that, my imagination gets ahead of me. I'm sure he doubled to thicken it up, this easily would do it. You crossed my mind the day we lost Ed. I hope you are well but I know it must have hit you hard like a lot of us out there brother. Great to hear from you bud.
