I came across a eclipse with 4 knobs, ssys esp on the headstock. Is this a full thickness top of the line model, price is reasonable.

What do you want to know? Early eclipses were 4 knob full thickness prior to threats from gibson. Badass guitars too btw.

If it is better than the three knob version. Their best eclipse produced aside from a custom shop.

There were plenty of models with four knobs and the proper LP outline, some thick and some not, some more expensive than others. They made them for years and years for the japanese and euro markets after the US got the three knob versions. Without more info it basically boils down to if you like separate tone knobs or not, and I doubt there is a neat line to be drawn just from the number of knobs considering all the other factors.

I just don't want to buy a cheaper production and from your post it makes it more confusing since they made so many lp models. Never been a esp guy but the modern features relief cuts/contour make it desirable.

There are different levels of them (standard and custom shop) but generally if it is the full thickness with 4 knobs and made in Japan it is a high quality and highly regarded instrument. I am a les Paul guy and have owned numerous ESP eclipses. The fit and finish is outstanding on even the standards. They are very comfortable to play with the contours and larger frets. Just keep in mind the neck is much thinner on an Eclipse vs a les Paul.

Yeah, everything that says ESP is at least a very good guitar, and whether is has three knobs or four doesn´t really matter. But we can´t say which model it is with the scant info in the original post, so there´s no telling whether it´s a Standard or something much more top-shelf.

There are different Versions outthere. Some of them were Full Thickness (meaning as thick as a Les Paul) and some had the normal Eclipse thickness. If it is a FT (Full Thickness) it should have the descripton FT in it or the Seller could say it to you. Normally you could also tell from a picture if it is FT or not. The FT Version has a different output jack while the regular Eclipse Models have a Cats Eye (more rounder) compared to the square like on a Les Paul.
Like Dave L said, we can´t tell from the original Post. The only info you gave is 4-Knob and that doesn´t tell anything.

Do you have pictures or more Information?

I'll see about the plate...The back says it's a standard.

That's not at all true. By the time ESP went to the 4-knob layout, the Eclipse guitars were all the thinner body. The Gibson thickness (referred to as full thickness) didn't really come about until 2007.

Here's a video of the information included in the ESP Forum thread:

Exo, is this the guitar you're talking about in the OP? https://reverb.com/item/64464135-esp-eclipse-4-knob-lawsuit-shape

I have a 2004 standard eclipse pre lawsuit model and it is not full thickness and has a mahogany body with a veneer maple top. It is a lot lighter than my new E-II stone sparkle eclipse. I don't notice any difference in quality between the two but I prefer the E-II. I like the satin finish and the EMG 57/66 combo over the 81/85. If someone offered to trade for a newer E-II eclipse, I would.

Stop knowing everything about esp guitars damnit. Also, how about some more pics of that banana creme 70s LP?

?

Yeah, it's knowledge that's gotten me far in life; babes, mansions, endorsement deals...

Maybe I'll start a thread of "old but not vintage Les Pauls" for people to post 70s and 80s Gibsons.
