Ever re-string a guitar and it just don't sound right..?

This is straight from one of those 'sealed bags' they ship in now too...

I'm used to new strings having 'chime' and sounding so new it's a little bit annoying until they settle down.

Put a set of d'addario XL (9-42) on my new SUHR and the unwound strings sound plinky but the low E sounds like I'm playing wool....overall the strings are very dead sounding. They don't look any different but sure as hell sound like shit....report back when I try another pair.

Well, that's 9 gauge for ya! I do use sets of 9.5 which are a cool hybrid set. Enough thickness yet they don't feel stiff like 10's.

What strings did you have on it before? I think Suhr's come stock with 10's. I tried something similar when going from 10's to 9's on my previous Suhr ended up going back to 10's, it just sounded bigger. I haven't bothered changing gauges on my Modern yet, the 10's feel perfect for me on this guitar, usually I hate 10's on a Superstrat .

I haven't played 9s in a long time it's true...but these really don't sound right.....wasn't enjoying the 10s on it at that scale length....if I get no joy out of another set of 9s (new pack) then I'll have to consider going back to 10s....I freakin' hate setting up Floyds tho

I usually use the Ernie ball hydrid slinky 9-46 on my old school floyded Jackson but I recently switched it up to some elixir 10s and I'm pretty happy with the switch . They're a little expensive but I think they sound great in comparison. IMO of course

For the record I've always disliked D'addarioarariasdf whatever it's spelled, I've tried them a few times before and the sealed bag thing seems like a good idea but it seemed like to me they went bad faster than any other strings I've ever tried plus they sounded like ass. They just sound kind of flat like they don't really have any life to them, I know lots of people that use them because they are always "fresh" in their hermetically sealed bag of poo.

I've been using GHS boomer's 10-52's for a long time now and really love the way they sound. I've even tried Snake Oil strings, they aren't bad but they don't have quite the bite the GHS do, however, the snake oils do seem to last for freggin EVER and supposedly don't wear your frets down like steel strings do. But again, the GHS seem to have higher output and more snarl and raunchyness to them.

I agree...every time I put D'addarios on, they sound really really bright to my ears. The again I use EB's, which I know a lot of people don't dig also, so YMMV.

eb's sound alright to me - people complain about tuning issues with them, but i've never experienced that myself.

i used eb's and ghs. which pack depends on the guitar - hard to explain from here.

A buddy of mine uses ghs boomers and he convinced me to give them a try a couple years ago. I got a couple packs and had nothing but bad experiences, first time a couple strings broke right off the bat and the second time one of the wound strings started to unwind within a couple days. It must just be me

Damn thats some bad luck dude, I've only every *knocks on wood* broken 1 GHS string in like the past 3-5 years I don't remember exactly when I fully switched to them. And that was on a Floyd guitar and they were getting old and in all honesty 10-52's just don't work so well on floyds at least the one I had. But I've NEVER had one unwind ever.

The only issue I ever had was that a few of my D strings were dead I called the store I bought them at and they gave me GHS's #, they shipped me like 6 D strings because I bought a bunch of packs and had quite a few that were dead, just a bad run I guess but they made good on it!

Daddario's should sound bright no matter the gauge. I just bought some 46-10 for D Standard....I was shocked how bright....I am used to Ernies, which I like for 9's, and have on my other guitars....maybe give the Ernies a shout.

I tried 'em before and they seemed a bit dark and erm...I dunno soft sounding..am thinking this might not be a good match with the guitar...Mahogany Neck/Body...Aldrich pickups...if anything I think the guitar needs a brighter/bitey sounding string...

I replaced both E strings and it's sounding better...pulled teh action up a tad and raised the bridge pickup..sounds a lot better now.

I'm still on the fence about the Aldrich pickup...seem a tad too smooth and compressed to me.
