Hello guys,
there are some interesting infos in an interview from Jas obrecht. In it eddie mentionned that josé added gain boosts to his mxr pedals.
Dweezil Zappa mentionned it in one article on the net, that it was modded and it was a very important element of ed's tone.
In some isolated records you can hear eddie kick a pedal and the volume raises a lot.
Joe holmes mentionned that he has the same josé mod made into his mxr phase 90.
Here it is that's joe holmes josé modded mxr phase 90 :
The mod has a toggle switch but you could make it work just threw the footswitch and no one would ever know about it.
José's stuff is mythical and i think it's still incredible we learn more and more about his mods.
let's hope one day those pedal mods will get available to the public.
In fact the 3 in 1 mod was not his only mod in a plexi he had multiple mods some with extra tubes some without them. He also had his own version of a cascade which is way different from the one wire mod and many other mods.
According to guitarist bryan jay josé often changed transformers of Marshalls and removed the stock components of them to replace them with new ones. Why would he do that ? Dave Friedman mentionned that josé didn't like the jcm 800 because he thought voltages were too low. Perhaps that he changed transformers to raise voltages and had to change components because voltages were way higher. Fun fact raising voltages in an amp makes it sound less muddy and fizzy, specially if you use high gain amps.
