EVM12L Classic & Black Label

EVM-12L classic = reissue, designed for n00bs
EVM-12L Zakk Wylde = designed for goatee-sporting uber-n00bs.

The real thing = about $125 shipped any day of the week on forums and ebay.

even a thrashed one can be reconditioned or reconed and sound great./

It's funny, but someone who's opinion I respect & who's recordings regularly get airplay on radio & TV told me that EVM12L BL sounds killer.

I myself had an EVM12L Classic in the Mesa Thiele (which I believe was reissue classic) & I thought it sounded killer, although I did think the top end was a little harsh.

Now either the real thing sounds over the head good or you've never tried either EVM12L BL or CL or if you have tried all 3 of them maybe you could let us know what exactly made you think that the new EVM12Ls are for "n00bs" & why you didn't like them.

any more details, maybe some specific differences you found, im curious on the 3 speakers myself, particularly the highs of the speaker as i can assume the lows hold together nicely

OK, so this was the one in my Mesa Thiele
Is it reissue?

The new one I've got is this
This one is definitely one of the new production units & sounds good, knowing what Bogner cabinet does to the sound I'd say identical to the one above.

Bumping this up because I'm looking for opinions as well and it looks like this thread didn't get a lot of input last time around.

The Black Label speakers seem to be warmer in the mid section,I have an older Boogie cab and the highs are super bright, and it's not something you can dial out,i've tried over and over, used an MXR 10 and 6 band EQ,used a Rane parametric,Furman etc,no luck.I like the Black Label EV's but they wouldn't be my first choice,as for low end, forget it,thay smoke all else, real clean tight low end crunch. It's just the highs i have a problem with.

More highs than a V30?

Thanks,

There are several versions of EVM12L

EVM12L Original 200 wt
EVM12L Mesa Labeled, later production 200 wt
EVM12L reissue 200 wt
EVM12L Black Label 300 wt

Original I've never tried, since they all seem to be so beat up or reconed, it's hard to come by with one in good condition.

EVM12L Mesa Labeled I've use quite a bit & that's my "main" rig right now. Quotes, because I don't play anymore, but that's the setup I ended up with, that sadly stays unplayed. They are great speakers, I've never heard a better one FWIW.

EVM12L Reissue - sounds pretty much identical to mesa labeled speakers after it's been used a while.

EVM12L Black Label - pumps out less low end than the other 2, I think it's mainly because of the 300 wt rating, sounds a bit crunchier too. I find them interchangeable though, I'd be happy with either one.

All the EVM12Ls have extended frequency range, which many people confuse with more high end. This is what I used to think when I dialed in my amps with shitload of high frequencies and a lot of nasty shit came out of that extended area. They do not have more high end, in fact I find them less bright & more full, however, the frequency range is extended, so they fill up more frequency spectrum.

Also Mesa cabinets loaded with EVMs are front loaded, so that's gonna make them more aggressive in highs. In the same cabinet they are far less brighter than say V30s or 75s in my experience.

So to sum it up, the 200wt EVM12Ls are my favorite speakers. I've used them with Mesas, Marshals, Diezels, Bogners, Soldanos, Naylors.... that's all I can think of right now and they always kicked ass, more so on stage. These speakers are meant to be played loud.

Hmm... Mesa/Boogie started offering EVM Black Shadows again? I think it might be possible that this is an older production model EV you have?

yes, they don't make cabs with EVM12Ls anymore, as far as I know.

Joe Bonamassa, Zak Wylde, Simon McBride, etc, etc. Granted, they're not here but at least as far as Simon and Joe, their tone rocks and they use EV12Ls exclusively. I don't care for Wylde so I won't speak to that one. :)

Man this thread is old.

Anyway, I have used my mesa halfback 412 cab with 2 EVM-12L's and 2 MC90's with my Marshall 2553 Silver jubilee. The Jubilee sounded great through this cab, not all EVM-12L's, though.

I have both. I also have the SROs Alnico and Ceramic. I use them in Mesa Thieles.

The BLs to me are darker and seem to roll off the top more. I don't find the mids as pronounced. Less cut. This is not a bad thing, just depends what you are after. I go back and forth all the time which I like more. NBarts if you're local you are welcome to borrow the cabs to try.
