first of all guys, don't ask me what tunes they played, I was not there with a scorecard writing them down, and its never something I remember anyway. I get too wrapped up in the playing and the performance, which for the evening I couldn't have been happier.
First up was Kings X
the band was super tight, but the sound mix was lame at best. Who they get to mix now days is pathetic and this is not the first show that I have been to where it took the first 3 tunes for the guy behind the console to get his shit together.
they did a lot of newer stuff, which I was not as familliar with (my bad, guess I need to get the new one) but overall, great performance. the vox were super tight, doug was right on, and Ty played that new tele shaped guitar of his the whole set. He has a new egnater set up and I have to say that the tone was Killer from his rig. Maybe could have been a bit thicker for the solo's, but that was probably more the sound guys problem they Ty's. Gerry Gaskills drumming was flawless and dead on, and Doug Pinnicks voice and bass playing was superb.
Living Color
Again, the mix could have been clearer for the instruments, but I will attribute some of that to Vernon Reids guitar tone, which for many tunes seemed to be passing thru a wha or other sweep filter and made for too noisey a signal. almost transistor radio sounding. worked on some things, not everything imo.
Glovers voice was dead on, I dont think he missed a note all set long, and he was as powerful vocally as he was 25 years ago. His Stage presence and strut is identical, about the only thing that has changed is he is no longer sporting his dreads, but a short haircut and a mugsy hat.
vernon was his usual self, more machine gun during solo's than melody, but that has always seemed to work for him. didnt get to see his rig, but as I said earlier, I thought the tone to be a bit thin. Guy next to me was swearing he was playing thru JSX's, could have been. would explain a lot about what I heard.
over all, every bit as good as Kings X, and Doug Pinnick even came out and sang a tune with them.
Extreme
lets put it this way, if Van Halen sounded as tight live as they did on studio takes, if Eddy played as flawlessly, if dave sang note for note and word for word, and if eddy had personality, then they woudl have touched upon where extreme was last night.
first of all, the Vox from all three were flawless. what you heard on recordings they did live, and much of it from Nuno while wailing away. Cherone did not flub one note that I noticed and was as strong at the end of the show as he was on the first song. A definate presence on stage, it was never booring watching him move around, pose, prance and do his thing. His Lyrics may be hokey at times, but his performance never was.
the Bass Player was as he should have been, held down the bottom end with the new drummer like a rock and between them created a solid base for the two stars of the band.
NUNO
holy shit this guy was on fire for the whole night!
that bumble bee thing he does as the intro to he man woman hater was flawless, his acoustic solo for the night was killer, get the funk out.............well, lets just say that as guitarist go, I would put him right up there with anyone, and probably above most. His stage presence was pure rock and roll, never booring watching Nuno, and his tone was Amazing. He was playing thru what I thougt were two randall heads and 6 4x12's, But I have never seen randalls like those before. if anyone out there knows what they were, I would appriciate a heads up on that.
even his talking it up to the audience was hysterical, the guy is a killer player and a riot. the guy is sitting there singing the theme to gilligains Island over stairway to heaven, and then rips on eddy van halen for stealing his lead singer, then in the middle of a tune ends up ripping into eruption and back out.
If anyone was thinking of not going, you are short changing youself. This show was the real deal, and worth the money for it.
