What is your favorite 6L6 or 5881's for your SLO? I don't want to spend alot of money on NOS so give me your favorite new production tube.

Thanks,

Chuck

While I can't speak for swapping tubes in a SLO, I can tell you that putting JJ 6L6's in my Soldano Hot Rod Plus was the best thing I ever did. It opened up that amp like you wouldn't believe. Quite frankly I was shocked how good it made it sound.

I haven't used an SLO, but my fave 6L6 are SED =C=. Every amp I've put them in sound great.

C'mon Chuck! You know that KT66's are the way to go!

I talked with Bill Sundt and he told me that unless you are opening up the master volumes, which is pure insanity since this amp will sterilize you wide open, the preamp tubes affect the tone alot more. He said they use Sovtek 5881's. So I just went to the tubestore and bought them. They were alot cheaper than the Winged C SED's by about $40 for the matched quad. Bill told me that they have had real good relability with the Sovteks. I changed the 12Ax7 in V2, which is for the overdrive channel, from a Tung Sol to a NOS Telefunken and it really opened up the tone and made it more aggressive. Excited to see how it sounds with brand new power tubes as well. Should get them next Wednesday or Thursday.

Chuck
