I know it is like comparing apples to oranges but i try anyway. To those of you who own both. Which do you prefer and why or do your preferences vary depending on what kind of music you play?

I'm more comfortable on a Strat and like single coils a lot, even under very high gain. But an LP is great too. I tend to default to a Strat or hot rodded Strat and pickup an LP just for a change of pace.

Stratocasters destroy Les Paul's. Les Paul's suck.

having been a devotee to both at different stages in my playing,

i would say lps are generally easier to play, are best suited to hard rock music, and much harder to find a really special one

strats are much more versatile tonally from clean to filthy, pretty consistent, and require more effort technically to master imo

my tyler was the best compromise i coild find tonally between a lp and strat, with a vintage feel of a worn in instrument.

I like 'em both, they each have something to offer the other dosent. Mentonman nailed it. ;)

H-S-S Strats.More comfortable and easier upper fret access, they have a tremelo. Owned 5 Les Pauls over the years and sold them all. Never could bond with them. I have an Epiphone LP from 95 that I like, but it's different from a real LP. I love the way Les Pauls look, and still find myself considering buying another. I don't like the sharp body edges and body thickness. Also don't like the upper fret access, especially when standing.

for me it just depends on what I'm playing. Higher gain, I usually go with the LP. Lighter gain & cleans, its hard to beat the neck pickup of a strat.

Les Paul or other humbucker loaded guitars for me. I could never live with a single coil in the bridge position for hard rock or metal.

Both, play the strat for strat tones and the les paul for LP tones.
Pretty much this. Some tones one guitar just will not get.

I started on a MIM strat and a strat just feels the most comfortable to me. I tend to like a humbucker in the bridge.

I love the les pauls I have too and gotten used to them over the years, but still prefer the feel of a strat.

Usually a Les Paul for me...... But have used nothing but my Stratocaster for over a month.

I love the look & feel of strats but love the fat tone of LPs, so I get super strats built that have mahogany a body/neck, with a humbuckers that split. Best of both worlds.

i am a super strat/regular strat dude
i can never get with how far away the volume and pick up selectors are on lp’s and the way the feel on my body
BUT
when doing real studio work in a pro session and you need to be in tune and have a fat consistent sound FAST a “keeper” proven worthy LP is tough to beat
both are real world craftsman tools for a reason and will always be in spite of all the trends and fads and gimmicks that come along
