So, just a side note that I have been looking to get a Martin acoustic-electric and ended up getting one today. Great guitars! But anyway, back to the post...

I had planned on buying the Martin from Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc. in person or was going to order from Sweetwater. I did a search within a few hours from me and there was a Mom & Pop store that had the guitar I wanted, about 2 hours away. I figured I'd make a day of it and stop some other places on the way back, etc.

So I go into this place and there are people coming in for lessons of all ages and everyone is "oh, hi Bob!!", "How's your grandmother doing Sue?", etc., etc. Everyone that walked into the door knew the guys in the shop and were making small talk. Was back to what I remembered from back in the 80s.

I looked at the guitar racks and everything was sorted by brand and guitar type. Fender Strats together, Jacksons together, etc. It was so organized. And then I look at the wall and there was the "Please Ask for Assistance" signs. Thank God!! There were no kids pulling knobs off guitars, etc.

The other cool thing was unlike Guitar Center, etc., they had more than just the vanilla guitars so to speak. They had an expensive Eric Clapton signature guitar, two of the U2 bass player's models, a Flea bass guitar. It was a great mix of stuff cheap and expensive.

The acoustic room had a crapload of guitars!! They were like "try out whatever you want man". My wallet was ready to catch fire in that place. The absolutely coolest thing was that I bought the guitar and then the guy said "hey if you have a few minutes, I'd like to put a new set of strings on the guitar. Kind of has that dead sound". I couldn't believe it. So the guy put a whole new set of strings on and this is after they gave me a discount for being a veteran.

There is something to be said about these Mom and Pop stores. I am going to plan on hitting this place from time to time when I'm looking for gear. The way they worked with me on things was just awesome!!

That’s cool that a store like this still exists. I’ve been to a couple of small indie stores around my area but for the most part they are cesspools of unorganized, cluttered junk.

Soo I’m pretty much limited to online purchases and sam ash. Guitar center hasn’t had anything I’ve really wanted in years...

there is a cool acoustic guitar shop where I live. I always have the same experience as you. the guy is knowledgeable, super cool, and always gives great discounts. anybody in the marin county area should check out eric Schoenberg guitars in Tiburon. he is also a great player. he has acoustics of all makes, models, and prices.

sometimes he also has some bitchin vintage electrics.

Yeah, most of the old school stores I've come across are always selling the cheapest brands and only catering to parents of young kids wanting to take lessons. They'll sell Austin, Squier, etc. guitars and a handful of decent guitars. This place had some good stuff and also still items cheap enough for new players.

Cool! But: How on earth do you type all that and not give this place some support and give their name a shout out?

Oh yeah, sorry. LOL! I normally don't do that because then people are like "oh great, I live 4,000 miles from there". They do have a Reverb page though and do ship!!

Good deal man! I have a phenomenal Mom n Pop shop in my area. Some super cool guys working there, and I've had some great experiences with them so far. They carry a nice mix of high end, mid grade, and lower end guitars and amps. Name of the place is Guitars and Amps in Billings, MT. Awesome awesome people to deal with.

That's awesome! I don't know what I would do without a local store, even if just for simple stuff.

I mean just yesterday, I went and bought some picks from them, and I found one I never would have thought of trying. You just can't do that without actually putting your hands on the pick and feeling the material.

Also, some of the stores here have really experienced guitar technicians and amp/pedal experts. I recently got my Kraken serviced by Goose, the guy who makes the Goosonique pedals, like the Seventh Heaven! Amazingly nice guy, and a complete professional!

I certainly couldn't imagine forking out shipping every time I wanted a packet of strings. And for some of the stuff here, I got it even cheaper than the US prices, like my Roland TD-30 kit.

Of course, there are some oddball stores, like one I go to quite often, but despite that fact, they always hover over me and start asking if I'm going to buy anything after 15 minutes of browsing. Irritating, but they are the dealers for a lot of good stuff, so...
