Hello,

Finally got my setup running but I had a question about levels between wet and dry.

Amps are wired as follows:

Guitar> input head one
Preamp output head 1 to Eventide H9
Eventide H9 stereo outputs to slave heads 2 and 3 effect returns.
Channel foot switch on head one.
Phase 90 and chorus going in the front.

Everything sounds great but I am not able to adjust the volumes on head 2 and 3 even though everyone says that I should be able to. I understand the EQ is shared from head one. Could the eventide be causing this problem? I even emailed EVH asking them the same question and they said the way it is wired I should have control of the volume on heads 2 and 3. For now I am adjusting the level of the wet channels with the Eventide.

I always use my FX unit (if not mixer) or mixer to adjust the volumes of the wet cabs.

Why are you slaving with EVH heads? Seems like it'd be cheaper to use a solid state power amp like a Matrix GT or something. Does the EVH only send the pre-amp signal on the line out? I could see that as the reason. If so, you could always get a Suhr ISO line out box to tap a line level signal after the power amp and get rid of the extra EVH heads.

This, I mean if it's the case of just what you have that's cool but there is no real reason to burn tubes, and haul around another head just to slave with.

Yes I fully understand I could’ve bought a power amp and a couple 112 cabinets but I wanted to have everything matching with matching heads I just like the way it looks I know sounds fantastic. Honestly it did not cost that much more because I got phenomenal deals on both heads so for the little extra money I love the cool factor and I love having matching equipment with absolutely no ground loop issues or phase issues. Also this will not be hauled around anywhere as it’s just in my garage and it is for my personal enjoyment only.

So back to the question, does anybody have any more input on why I would not be able to adjust the volume on the slave heads?

sweet setup! i did a dry wet setup years and years ago. i should do one again for shits and giggles. ran a carvin legacy for my wet sound. i should grab another cheap carvin for it

I am in the process of doing a W/D/W rig myself. I am using 3 EVH 4X12's, and an eventide pitchfactor to feed a solid state stereo power amp. it is an EVH inspired wish I had the balance tone type of set up. the only thing I haven't decided yet is what amp head will sit on top. I have a few different heads but they are all a bit too modern sounding. two black cabs for the outside with a white cab in the center. I think I may even paint the van halen stripes on the grills of the cabs   . it is strictly a home set up. my gig rig is far more simple.

by the way, I love the set up you have

Yeah, the channel volumes are BEFORE the fx send. The fx return feeds directly into the phase inverter. Whoever answered your email from Fender / EVH appears to have no clue how to read a schematic.
You will have to adjust the wet volume from the Eventide unit. This may end up being the best way anyway, because the level to both slave heads will be the same, and ........
Extra bonus: You can now connect an expression pedal to the H9 to control the wet volume on the fly

I'm also in the middle of getting a new w/d/w rig together but, I'm going a slightly different path. I'm going do it with only 2 stereo 4x12 cabs, an Axe Fx II XL+ for pre and post processing, and a Mesa JP-2C for the amp.

I'll plug the guitar into the Axe Fx, set up my pre effects (wah, whammy, boost, etc) and then, insert an efx block. from there the frontend effects will go out to the input of the JP-2C. Then, from the JP-2C's slave out, I will return to the Axe Fx for post processing and then send that "wet" signal out to my Matrix power amp.

By using two stereo 4x12 cabs, I can send the JP-2C's normal speaker outputs to the "inside" speakers of the 2 4x12's and let the matrix with the wet signal go to the "outside" speakers of the 2 4x12's.

This works because at no point am I ever returning the slave signal back into the JP-2C.

I'm really looking forward to hearing this beast fire up!

You're only using the power amp section of heads 2/3 and the channel volumes are part of the preamp section.
You will be able to adjust presence and resonance on heads 2/3 but not volume. Your head # 1 will control the overall volume of the rig. That's why heads 2/3 are called "slave" heads.

You can use the H9 to adjust the wet volume if you want to.
