I've been dicking around with recording for a couple of months here and there. No real serious attempts at anything, but I've been wanting to get a simple setup for live tracking my bands new song ideas, since 2 of our members live 3.5 hours away and our vocalist lives about 9 hours away.

Went with a 3 mic drum setup. Single overhead placed dead center pointing down at the kick drum, 1 snare batter head mic and one kick mic inside the kick.
For guitars, sm57's on a single speaker for each guitarist, and bassist went di out from his head into the interface.

Basically set levels after recording, added compression to the kick and snare, rolled the lows and highs of the guitars, and that's it. Perfectly usable demo tones, and it was super easy.

I really like the song and guitar tone....not so much the drums though....consider triggers for the kicks?

I have no issues with how the kick sounds here. I was quite happy with it actually. The snare is a little too pokey and needs more body, and obviously the drums need mixing. There is no reverb or room effect on them so they sound dry.

All I did was add compression to the snare and kick, and rolled the highs off the overhead.

Don't touch the kick with any trigger bullshit. If anything just augment them slightly with a sample but let the kick stay the predominant sound with the sample adding some cut... i think for demos and ideas, it is a nice clean recording and I thought the drummer played his parts great!

For just doing it for a few months, it sounds pretty great! If I were to buy a demo of this quality at a show I'd be pleased. The guitar tones are solid and that snare is actually a lot better than you give it credit for.

Just listened to this again on better headphones.
