flange and phaser in front or the loop?

I prefer those sort of things in the loop, but they can work well in front too.

phaser in the front. for flange it can go either way depending on what type of sound you want. For a chorsy flange put it in the loop, and for a jet sounding flange in the front.

Phaser and Flanger in front, all time based effects (chorus, pitch, reverb & delay) in loop.

Out front for both. The flange can really go either, but I actually think it sounds better with Recto style gain if it is out front. In the loop with a Recto, it sounds too electronic and unnatural to my ears. At least, that is what my MXR 117 Flange sounds like in my Roadster's loop. My Phase 90 is amazing out front. It is my auto wah style sound.

I run it all up front for playing live. It may be more about my discomfort with FX loops, volume loss, etc. The new TC Electronics delay and flanger work well in front of a high gain amp too. I was surprised as most flangers generally have some god awful tone degradation with them as the bottom falls out and the top end gets thin, not these though. You just got to find the right one's that work up front for you.

Front. I like ALL modulation out front including chorus because it sounds sterile in the loop. Verb in the loop. Delay i like both in the loop AND out front.

I prefer them in front of the amp. I use a more chorusey sounding flanger with a warm swirl, rather than the jet plane metallic whoosh flanger sound. Usually I use it for clean stuff, but for clean tone leads (picked hard so there's some grit) it sounds really good, it really glides along.
Using the flanger for a really heavy sound is cool for some things, but I think the higher gain signal can exaggerate the modulation a bit, so much that it gets in the way of a sound. I prefer the Neunaber Chroma as it's a 'static" chorus- works better with dirt.

You can hear what I mean by this (crappy) video clip I did a while back. I had a long tiring day and was a bit cranky at the time, plus the camera makes the amp sound a bit too fizzy and thin. Still, you can hear how it sounds on the clean tones and the heavy distortion at least. If I wasn't so cranky at the time I would have played some lead-y stuff! (I just wanted to get the video done.) You'd probably have to mix in the flanger quite low so it doesn't sound too swoopy with high gain.

Guitar-> Deluxe Electric Mistress flanger-> MarkIV-> Mesa/Boogie 4x12 cab w/V30s. There's heaps of other gear in that room but I didn't use 'em.

I like both in the loop. Especially if you're going to be using dirt from the amp.

Yes, it's a direct quote from a thread at The Gear Page. The quote is the 5th post in that thread.

Although I thought it was just someone taking the piss out of TGP when they posted that there. It was so good I had to use it for my signature!
