Flew out of Montreal with my Suhr Modern in my SKB ATA case enroute to LAX via Detroit.
Montreal CRJ50 to Detroit. Got to the ticket counter, baggage guy says take that to oversize baggage, I say it's my guitar, he says oh, no problem sir you can take that with you.
Finally get to the gate and no way it must be gate checked, they plane is full and it is not going on EVEN if it was a gig bag.

Detroit to LAX Airbus A330...FULL, gate area lady says no way is that going on board the plane is full, she says take it to the gate to be gate checked. I get to the plane and the steward says."Let me see if we can get that in a closet". So we try and it doesn't fit. He says stay here I'll be right back. He comes back with Captain Delta. Captain says "Can I see it?" I show him he says wow that's gorgeous! He says I can strap that into a jump seat on the flight deck. So he does :)

I'm at the back of the plane, we I de-plane, Captain is standing there waiting with my guitar and says thanks for flying Delta, I said thanks for going above and beyond!

Both flights were Delta.

Moral: This guitar simply would not have got on as carry on on the CRJ50..NO ROOM anywhere. I'm glad it was in the ATA case!
The Airbus A330 had a helpful crew that went above for me. Regardless I will always travel with the flight case because had the Suhr been in the gigbag on the first flight I would have been fucked.

I know there will be a million guys that say "I can always get my guitar in a gig bag onboard" Well I can't so I'm bringing a case lol.

great story. i used to take my neck off so i could take my guitar onboard every time. the ATA case is a good idea anyway.

I never had an issue with a gig bag on a flight...times, they are a changin'.

I've never had a problem (on 100+ flights) having a guitar as carry-on in a simple gig bag. When the overhead's were extremely full I've had to use the coat locker up front.
I don't (won't) bring my expensive guitars to fly-in gigs...cheapie Squire strats setup to play nicely are just fine with me.

With an expensive guitar that I really valued, I would use a very sturdy hard case (like you have) and skycheck it...you see it go on the plane as you board, you see it come off the plane when you unboard. I would never use general baggage for a guitar...ever!

Note: the comment concerning the Musician's Union, this is true...I carry this letter with me

"This is from the Musician's Union (Local 802, in NYC) about travel tips for musicians. This (PDF file) is a an official letter from the Transportation Security Administration stating that musicians are allowed to bring instruments on a plane as a carry-on. I haven't needed to use it yet, but I keep it with me just in case."

You had a good experience but it doesn't change the fact that Delta still blows. I miss Northwest airlines. :(

Delta isn't perfect, but they're about as good as any other large airline out there. 'Cept maybe Southwest.

dissappointing thread, I expected to see Mark jamming a solo so intensely that he levitated off the ground

See, I figured it was going to go a little more like this:

i usually just check my guitars in baggage, so far the only issue i ever had was a few scuffs on the case.

If you have one of those ATA flight cases, is checking a guitar in baggage really that bad of an idea? I can't imagine it being treated any worse than how FedEx, UPS, etc treat it.
