If you listen to VH1 raw tracks out there, Eds tone is really bright and harsh. Its the post eq studio stuff that makes it sound good. Anyway this guys playing is impressive. That guy put a lot of time into Eddie. Only thing i cant get past is in the beginning of the vid I woulda swore he was using a modeler till he went thru his amp setup. There is either too much gain or too much top end on it (or perceived both). It just sounds harsh to me, which kills the vibe of everything else. He seemed so in tune with everything else I am surprised thats the tone he went for.
This was focused on VH1 so no, just a Franky and a Destroyer (Greco).I didn't watch the entire thing. Did he have a Steinberger?
As I was watching I was thinking; "That's exactly what I do for that very reason." With my homebrew '69 SL every knob except Vol I and Vol II has to be on 10 or it's not quite right. But Vol I on 7-8 or so sounds better than on 10. Vol II anywhere just past noon is good.At the end he talks about volume pot location. He’s basically saying he doesn’t run it on 10 because he wants the bright cap to still have an affect on sound.
That would make sense as to why I was hearing that top end brashness. I dont get why he would leave it in the signal but its all personal taste I guess. All that knowledge and research and you can hear its not that early VH tone. Close.. yea, but with all he has I dont think he was just going for "close".Sounds cool.
I don’t agree with a lot of things he says just based on knowledge of amps. One big thing is that it’s known that Eddie slaved one Marshall into another… meaning one Marshall was acting like a preamp pedal. We’ve all seen the bomb and the big ohmite resistor thingy.

Biggest thing is the guy can play the shit correct with pretty spot on feel.
VH 1 is way brighter that VHII and on to my earsThat guy put a lot of time into Eddie. Thats why I said its either too much gain or too much top end. VH 1 is all over the place at times with gain but his tone is consistent for the most part. To my ears this is just too brash. Check out some Mark A (Rockstah)s clips or some Al Estrada. Also Bill Landry does a great Eruption that cops that upper end slur Ed gets really well.VH 1 is way brighter that VHII and on to my ears
He actually may be the best I have seen playing Ed`s stuff
On the slim chance you may not of heard Jacob Deraps. He was 16 when he recorded this.He actually may be the best I have seen playing Ed`s stuff
