Fortin Bones vs. Natas? (now it's a NAD)

I don't know abut the Natas, but the Bones I had would't be my first choice for anything requiring "high-gain." It can do it if you put everything on 10. But it's more of a rock amp. Think Foo Fighters, Big Wreck, '90s rock, etc. Was a great amp. But not my thing for more aggressive stuff.

Woudn't come close to anything from Diezel or Fryette/VHT in terms of gain and agression.

I disagree
The Bones has the voicing to do modern metal, without having everything on 10

Apparently the Bones is Channel 4 of the Meathead. I know there are several run-throughs of the Meathead, so perhaps viewing those would help determine it Bones is right for you.

My guess is there aren't a whole lot of people that have played a Bones and the non prototype Natas since there aren't many floating around. Plus, some Bones have different features (boost, raw/smooth switch, etc.), so that makes it an even harder question.

I've never played a Bones, but I have a Natas. Other than both having that signature Fortin grind and neither being overly saturated, the Bones honestly sounds pretty different in the clips I've heard. The Bones, while sounding modern, still has a nod to a classic tonality/voicing. That's not the case with the Natas. It's modern voiced through and through, and has its own thing going on.

I traded my Herbert for a Bones when they first came out.
This was after playing the #1Fortin Meathead a buddy owned and brang it over to my place.
Loved Channel 4. It was was so different then the Herbert. So I got the Bones within a week.
It was ok. Not metal but more rock. Even with all on 10. It was doing some great Ozzy though.
What it did it did great! But struggled for the real heavy stuff.
Emailed Mike Fortin back and forth and he told me the Bones is not a metal amp.
Just my 2 cents. I sold it 2 days later.

Never had the chance to check out the Natas.
Here are some pics of the Meathead at my place. Got some pics of the Bones somewhere on the computer.

So can the Bones do modern metal or not? I was in the market for one but I was under the impression it excelled at high gain. Maybe I need to listen to more clips because now you guys are talking me out of it.

I forgot this place is toomuchgain.org

The Bones doesn't have as much gain as a Diezel or Engl, but if know how to mix your amp tone in a recording or band situation, it'll work. An external boost can help too, but it's already real tight

I would say get one and check it out. They have a good resale value if you dont gel with it.
I like to have an amp that can handle really aggressive metal but if you back down the gain it can do rock.
Rather be able to let off the gas then keep it floored all the time. ;)

I've only played the natas and I thought it sounded a bit synthetic. Not as fake sounding as something like a powerball or jvm, but still fake. It also didn't sound as big/wide or growly for power chords as I normally like. Definitely very modern voiced. It has a metallic edge to it's sound (especially noticeable for chugs), which I really liked, but overall I much prefer my pittbull UL. It has everything I liked about the Natas but sounds bigger, more open, in your face, and not synthetic.

I'm very curious about the bones though. I wonder how it would compare to something like an SLO? I'm guessing it won't be as raw and aggressive as something like a wizard?

Dont get me wrong....the Bones was awesome in its own.

But for modern metal....nope.
Again just my opinion. ;)

Here are a few pics of the Bones I owned.

My thoughts on the Bones was that it sounded "smooth" and "round" and "fuzzy in the lows". Very tight low-end, though. Had a sort of bounce to it. But could stop on a dime and held everything together very well. That was my favorite thing about it. And it didn't sound thin or harsh or anything like that. Just really good all around. But it didn't growl or snarl enough for my tastes. And at least for the one I had... I had to put the gain at like 3:30, mids cranked up all the way, H voicing, raw switch engaged, and the additional mid voicing switch for H mode flipped over to add more gain in the mid range to get anything resembling "high-gain."

Really good cleans and a great loop, too.

You can do "metal" on the Bones if you want. But it's not really what I'd think it's wheelhouse is. It's squarely planted in the land of rock.

Listen to something like Albatross or Wolf, by Big Wreck and those are the kinds of tones the Bones is centered around, in my opinion. But hell... you can play metal on a Fender Champ if you really want.

I just bought the Bones that was in the classifieds.

I just plugged into it. :rawk:

My little metal guitar world has just been turned upside f'ing down. First off, anyone that thinks the Bones lacks bass. Quit using it with a Rogue 1x10" ext. cab. Plug it into a real 412 and have yourself some bass and a smile.

It does METAL...... really, really, really well.

It sounds like a Diezel, but it doesn't sound like a Diezel.....  It's got that hifi kick butt sound, but it's OPEN and lacks compression.

First amp I've ever had where I think it almost sounds better WITHOUT a boost!

Chunky friggin' bottom end. I'm like a death metal loving 15 year old that just learned how to do palm mutes with his BC Rich bronze and crate with a Digitech death metal pedal.

Chunk chunk chunk.... I can't stop!

So there you go!

I have to go now, and do more palm mutes. Bye!

You just bought the Bones I used to own. ;) I was playing it through a Bogner 4x12. Sounded pretty good. But just wasn't aggressive enough for me. But yes, low end was very tight and had girth to it. I just thought my Peters was more to my liking. Goes to show how subjective it all is.

But congrats!

The loop is really good, btw. And the actual construction is outstanding.

Seems like a bunch of us are in the same area (Bay area?). We should get a meet up going.

I'm with you Dan. That same Bones amp that we both owned just lacked the gain other describe. It could do Ozzy or 80's rock but not much more without a boost. I swapped all the tubes and discussed with Mike. Then ended up moving it for a PT100 back then. Maybe it was just that particular head or someone fooled around inside it, like a mailman

Well the one we had was one of the first ones made. Maybe the later versions were more aggressive? :dunno:
It was decent sounding for sure. I ran it thru two 4x12's as well.
