I was originally hesitant about the price, nonetheless placed my order before Christmas. I received my Zuul today. OMG

I have an original Decimator that did the trick in the guitar chain. However, I wanted to squeeze out additional noise from the amp lights, wiring, etc.

Not only does the ZUUL clamp down the guitar signal as the Decimator does, it TOTALLY ELIMINATED all other noise. My amp is DEAD quiet. I have never "heard" my high gain tone so clean and clear.

The Decimator has been shelved. The Zuul is absolutely the best piece of gear I have purchased in a long time.

How is the decay? Or release or whatever you want to call it. Have been having a hard time getting an answer to this.

Like if you were doing some fast chugs or something and then stop playing or have silent rests inbetween, is there that ugly static noise that most of these pedals have?

I wanted to hate it because the price was awful and the hideous graphic.

It is the best gate currently on the market.

however VERY soon most if not all gates will follow suit with detection jacks up front. This is the new paradigm, I cant wait for that.

You can adjust it like you want, that's what i like about it. You can go more agressive without chopping your notes. At low volume the Decimator do the job as well.

It's at high volume with a band, that's where the Zuul beat the Decimator for me. The Zuul can cut the squealing noise better with a very hot signal (active pickups+boost) and the low-end is tighter too. Because it's a noise gate not a downward expander like the decimator. The best way i can describe you the Zuul, transparent Boss NS2 with a better range.

I think what you hear in these clips is the way the recording is made (gear and/or setup).

You play death metal and stuff like that, can't beat the Zuul for that.

Hope it helps!

Chris

Thank you for your post. I would love to get me a ZUUL. I have a boss NS-2 noisegate- how much of an improvement is the ZUUL compared to the boss to justify the price difference?

It’s worth the price if you play high gain at band volume. Like Metal1977 said: clamps harder and faster with more transparency. Love my Zuul, but when I’m playing quieter, it’s not as necessary.

To answer your question, I do know what you mean about the hiss in between notes. At times where my noise of lights, amp, etc. was at it's highest, I could never set my Decimator quite right. I would get the hiss eliminated when playing was stopped, but there was still the the slight coloring of note with "noise & hiss".

It is difficult to explain, but I feel the Zuul affects all aspects of the note, "beginning, middle and end", if I can explain it this way. Like the Decimator, the Zuul clamps the beginning & end of the note flawlessly. IMO, the difference between the Zuul and Decimator, is the Zuul's ability to clamp the noise during the "middle" of the note. No hiss to color the note as the note plays, AT ALL. Therefore, no noise at all before, during or after the note plays.

My wife was begging me to get ZUUL so I can squeeze out the additional noise from when I float large air biscuits... don't know if it will work though.

Where is the "milk flowing from my nose" emoji?

It is not hiss. Or feedback at that. It is decay I believe, very hard for me to explain but i will just copy what i posted in the other thread so you can hear what i am talking about.

You can hear it here at 7:12

and here at 1:10

So...It is the noise that you can hear in these videos whenever they stop playing. A noise that is almost static sounding. I believe it is called decay or release.

I have heard it in all of the videos and I am just asking, can that be dialed out?

I understand what you are asking now. I can't honestly say with 100% certainty, as I usually play with a slight delay in the loop. I'll have to get back to you.

Thanks

Given all of the great things I am hearing about the Zuul I am interested. However, this noise is pretty much a deal breaker for me as I am perfectly ok with my G String 2 and it would be a hassle to sell and rebuy something kind of thing so that is why I am asking about it.

I see that you run a delay in the loop. Do you run the ZUUL as well in the loop? If so, how does it work with leads? Notes sustain? Are they cut off?I would assume that the ZUUL (in the effects loop chain) would go before all time based effects.

I have one and like it. I bought used to eliminate the middleman.

I think what makes the sound you are hearing is the mic. I also hear some ground loop noise at the moment he opens his guitar volume. Nothing to do with the Zuul, it's all part of the recording setup.

Thank you. Was your comment "clamps harder and faster with more transparency" in comparison to the boss pedal?
