Just saw these new 2025 Schecs featuring this finish technique

Now, taken that these would have looked MUCH better without it, is this going to be the next "burled top finish everyone" kinda trend for imports in the near future? Me hopes not

Is the wood damaged in the process or can it be removed?

Well, let's talk some science here. If roasted maple became a thing because of the way it increases the crystalline structure in the wood, leading to better resonance, then surely zapping guitars with thunder bolts would make for better tone, right?

Plus somebody gets paid to zap guitars with a tazer. Win win, really. I might consider a career change if this takes off.

I guess it's permanent.

Not sure the impact the process has on guitar resonance, I guess it's a rather superficial thing so not a huge change. With that said, it appears to be quite dangerous as there are quite a few reports about people being electrocuted to death by doing so.

Which is quite metal.

/\ Yep, that's some crazy dangerous shit. I had seen it a long time ago in a museum and discussed it with my dad(he passed in 1990). He knew about it from an old woodworking magazine. I always though it would look great on a guitar. It's always very random how the burn marks flow.

Yeah the variation is the fun part of the deal, like shattered mirror finishes, crackled or swirled. I don't particularly hate the guitars above, they are somehow cool, problem is they'd look much cooler without those lightnings - which would be super rad on a gloss white E-1 guitar.

Schecter's been on a roll lately! Of putting out hideous guitars, like the old days! I guess when the owner died, Traditional went with him. They're back to making hideous metal guitars.

Na, they've never stopped putting out flamboyant looking guitars, and these are not even close being the worst they've ever made when Shibuya was alive and well. The owner is different, but the president is still the same, and this is how he wants things done apparently: have your guitars look different (or "very Schecter") adding loads of garishness to otherwise very interest, but "very normal" designs. This is how he runs the import line.

Luckily, the USA custom shop is another thing, very traditional and classy stuff. Market choices.
