replacing the preamp tubes in my framus cobra. i know there are some "secret sauce" tube combos, but am too computer illiterate to find them on the internet. i tried google, but felt like a dog looking at it's master with his head tilted.

i would like channel 2 to be as heavy as possible. channel 3 is already over the top, and has more than i need...and i love that. the loop is working fine. not too worried about the clean channel. power section is not biased super hot, and i am not sure i wanna heat it up too much anyway.

if you have/have had a cobra and done the preamp tube shuffle, any advice you can give me would be wonderful. i will be placing another order with laura for the tubes as soon as i can figure out if i am going to go the NOS route or just go with straight rubys.

i also need to know if the slots are V1-V5 straight across from the front, the back, or whatever. thanks for your help.

I remember people used to have RFT or some other NOS tube on v1 (tungsram?) and a couple shuguangs for v2 and v3

JJ's in the first positions tend to sound dry and a bit dark

i settled on

V1 - Tungsol or EH
V2 - shugang/penta labs (same thing) 9th gen
V3 - shugang/penta labs (same thing) 9th gen
V4 - EH or mullard
V5 (Phase invertor) - Sovtek LPS or a 12AT7 tube (various)

at the end of the day...changing your preamp tubes wont give you a noticable diffrence. there might be some more/less <insert cork sniffery term> but if you really want to hear a noticable improvement/diffrence...speakers are the way to go.

crunch channel with greenbacks in the cobra cab = WIN

I tried different tubes in my cobras over the years but my favs was the ruby el34bstr and as for the pre tubes i liked 8th and 9th gen chinese.

Yes preach on broths...Cobra sounded best to me with the Ruby BSTRs in the power section... And it seemed to like Chinese 9ths in the pre... I used to mix some chinese with maybe an EH or Tungsol in v3 . Sovtek LPS in the phase inverter is good also.

damn, guys. super thanks for the info.

getting with laura later this week to order new tubes.

That is exactly what I put in the Cobra I had over here a couple months ago. It sounded crushing.

sorry i just have a Dragon but, i am looking for a Cobra as i type this.

i use NOS RCA 7025's in V1 and 2 and use the shortest plate possible in 3 and 4.

right NOW i'm running a GE 7025 medium plate and an RCA 7025 in the first positions and after that are just JJ re branded ECC83s's until i get the rest but, that does great. really the V1 and V4 are most important imo. 1,2 and 4 if you can.

Ideally i'd run NOS RCA 7025's in 1,2 and the GE in 3 then Tung Sols or mullard RI's from there.
