I am building one of these after the paint/body work is completed by a friend of mine. Have read some threads about the Duncan Custom, the EVH pickup, and lastly the Motor City Black Belt 2. Can someone comment on or point to any threads that run these subjects to ground in terms of pickup selection?

My favorite pickup for doing the EVH thing is the Arcane Brownbucker. I had a Duncan '78 in my guitar for years and really liked it. Then the Arcane sales rep came in and insisted I try the Brownbucker. I really wasn't interested. But I eventually tried it and told the sales rep he was not getting the pickup back. I became an Arcane dealer (first one in the world   ) and mention them anytime someone wants the EVH sound. I sold all the Duncan '78's out of my guitars, replaced them with Brownbuckers and I am completely done when it comes to looking for a pickup for the EVH tone.

The Duncan Custom Custom is actually the common VH tone SD pickup. It's an A2 magnet, as is the Frankenstein pickup from Fender.

Friedman loves the Motor City Black Belt 2s for the VH tone.

I have been wanting to try the Fender Frankenstein pickup for awhile, but just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

If you're going to run the amp through a real plexi, I recommend the Fender Frankenstein pickup. It has way more output then the pickups Chub recommended and I find that through a plexi, with no additional boost of any kind, I get great VH tones...

For higher gain amps, I love the Duncan '78 for VH. I'd love to try the Arcane Brownbucker, But Charvel still has mine at the Custom Shop to put in a guitar they are building for me. Coming up on the year anniversary... who knows when I'll see that one...

I use a Duncan 78 in a superstat and really like it. It replaced a Motor City BB2, which I thought was a little bright while soloing, but I think it's that particular guitar. I think the A2 in the duncan really smoothed it out for me.
But I'm not really trying to clone the VH tone...more like the same style of gain and clarity.

Anyway, I really like the 78. Chubtone had a clip floating around comparing the Arcane and the Duncan and I did actually prefer the Arcane...but the Duncan was available locally. Call me lazy. :)

I'm not trying for the VH tone but I really like the EVH Frankenstein pickup for just an overall good sounding pickup. I've got it in 2 of my main guitars now.
