So I picked up my Ibanez S Series last night, which I haven't played in a while, and noticed it had developed some pretty bad fret buzz on the first 3 frets. I'm assuming since it's only the first 3 frets it's not a bridge issue. Any ideas that might fix this problem? Truss rod adjustment? New nut? Any advice would be helpful.

Does the buzz still occur on open strings? If so, the nut is probably too low.

Is the neck pretty straight? hold down the first fret and the last fret, then check the clearance between string and fret around the 9th fret. There should be a little bit of clearance there.. i dont like too much relief, just a touch.

If the truss rod is set ok, and the bridge isnt way too low, and the buzz doesnt happen on open strings.. then i would guess that you have un-even frets on the neck.

If it didn't buzz last time you played it, the most likely scenario is neck movement requiring a truss rod tweak. Check the relief the way Dan described.

take it to a repair shop. they can tell you better then just guessing. :D

If the trus rod is good, and it only happens on teh first few frets you might have had a fret pop up. Put a straight edge on the frets, and see if it rocks on the fourth fret. I had that happen on my Warmoth V, and conditioning the fretboard helped. I might still have to glue it down.

I have a S prestige, and that thing needs a truss-rod tweak every time the temp changes. (minor)
