I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit. I’ve had three Friedman amps for well over a year now, the Buxom Betty not that long because she's not been out of the house that long, but a good 5/6 months, with some solid playing time.
I frequently get requests from folks to, “tell me about the amps”, describe them” “will they work for this style or that style”, you know, the regular amp questions. I have been responding with the typical, well the SmallBox has this level of gain, or the Dirty Shirley cleans up like this, the Buxom Betty’s sounds like that.
I think I’ve come up with a better, more descriptive/accurate reply after really working with these amps for quite some time.
My buddy NB, and I have been doing some fairly serious comparisons with these Friedman amps, Buxom Betty, SmallBox, Dirty Shirley, and many “comparable” boutique amps.
In the end the Friedman’s pretty much are the top of the top, for us anyway.
So in our efforts to describe these amps to each other, and comparing them to other amps, we have arrived at the following descriptions.
Buxom Betty: Well mannered, clean, articulate, prim and proper, what you put into her is what you get out. Great clean platform! And, she has big titties, not being funny, there is some serious oomph there.
SmallBox: Capable, versatile, SOLID, polite, your average honest hard working salt of the earth gal. Workhorse! And, she’s got some personality, if you pay attention you will not get bored with her.
Dirty Shirley: Loose, a little wild, never quite sure what your gonna get, but she's always a good time. Free spirit, not much she can’t/won’t do. And, she gives it up easy.
Maybe NB & I are way off the mark here, but I don’t think so. We think Dave & Co. have named these amps pretty damn well.
Am I wrong?
Cheers!
ps: I really want to try a Pink Taco, if the naming conventions hold true, that amp has got to be the cute, wild 21 year old, out partying all night without a care. Not a lot of depth, but Fun!
