So I went to GC today and had no idea what lie in wait. I have visited this particular GC periodically over the last 10 years whenever I'm visiting my in-laws, and 99% of the time all they carry is garbage. Today I walk in and go straight to the little soundproof room and low and behold whats sitting there but a Friedman Dirty Shirley 40 , Runt 20w, Runt 50w & a Peavey 6505+.
I've not played any of those amps and immediately fired up the Friedman Dirty Shirley grabbed a Fender American strat and went to town. WOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!
I then plugged in a higher end Fender tele and next a Jazzmaster and finally some D'Angelico hollow body and was utterly inspired by the amp with all guitars.
The Dirty Shirley was so much fun to play on and the response and ability to get searing feedback on some dirty blues licks was down right inspiring.
The runt 20 was a lot of fun too but didn't compare to the DS 40, and the Runt 50 was almost as fun and inspiring as the Dirty Shirley. I'm sure with some tweaking the runts would be just as fun, just in a different way.
I played all 3 Friedman amps through whatever Marshall 1960A cab they had it hooked up to. No idea what speakers were in it, all 3 amps smoked through that cab.
Now believe it or not, I've never played a 5150/6505 and knew this was a must since they had one sitting there. I asked the dude at the counter for a TS or any TS variant cause that's how I roll on metal amps. He handed me a Maxon something or other, and I said that'll do. The amp was plugged into a Marshall 1960A cab and I have no idea what speakers were in it. I grabbed a PRS Tremonti SE (What a guitar!!!!! Me wants
) and plugged in and after some tweaking on the red channel I was absolutely blown the fuck away
I cranked the pre to about 4-5 and the post a touch over 1 and was ripping all kinds of nasty thrash and death type stuff. I can't believe I waited so long to try one of these and honestly, it EASILY would hang at every level with every other high end amp I've owned/played in the past and also my current ENGL amps and the KSR ARES I just picked up.
There are a lot of amps still on my hit list to own (The fucking Chupacabra being the highest on the list
), but I think the PV 6505 or 6505+ may be next considering how cheap you can pick em up
What a deliciously brutal amp
