I'm surprised at how many of these I see for sale on the used market already. I wonder why?

I think most guys think it's going to be a cheaper version of the BE-100, which I don't think it really is to be honest. It's a damn good sounding amp and the voicing is great, but a BE-100 it is not. (I'm only selling mine because I want to get a Bogner XTC)

Disclaimer - Mine's for sale in the emporium. Along with a Smallbox.

That said, I have a one amp rule. I like the Runt. MUCH more than the 2 BE-100's I have owned. But there was an amp that I had been gassing for that came up for sale and does not come up used often, so the one amp rule was in effect. If I didn't get this other amp, the Runt would not be for sale.

The Runt's DNA clearly sits in the BE-100 camp. For me, the Runt gain is far more effective than the BE when the volume was rolled down on the guitar. The BE flattened out/dulled too much for my liking when rolling down the guitar volume. Runt doesn't have that "issue". And I never liked the HBE. I think the clean is far ahead of the BE100.

For the price, the Runt is very difficult to beat. And no, I'm not a Mesa fan, so the TC50 isn't on any radar of mine.

Totally agree... I've owned a BE and didn't like it that much and I really don't get the hype around that amp. Friedman makes some nice amps but the BE isn't one I cared for at all. I played a Runt 50 and I'd get that before a BE for sure but my favorite was a Dirt Shirley..... if that amp only had a clean channel or a switchable gain.

To me, the Runt sounds less organic & cheaper sounding than the other Friedman amps, for what it's worth. It just doesn't sound that great to me.

I'd go for a Dirty Shirley or a BE any day over the Runt.

But the price point of the Runt is the main attraction over, let's say, a BE-100.

Honestly, my Friedman modded 20 watt Jet City amp sounds more aggressive than the Runt (voicing is identical), but the Runt is much cleaner sounding. Pros and cons . . .
