How about a plexi reissue (with a loop) and the BE pedal? Used 1987x and a new BE pedal will run around 12-1400 with a used Marshall...

I'm looking for a simpler setup, with that BE tone. I don't need cleans, don't need multiple channels.

50 watts, or less, (if possible without going to EL84's.

Will a Splawn get there? I'm looking for more high gain Plexi.

One channel with FX loop is all I need!

You don`t need cleans I`d say go for the Splawn Competition

I was thinking BE-OD through whatever. I have a runt 20 and love it. I don't play loud, so not sure how el84s sound cranked, but mine sounds great through a splawn 2x12 w/v30s.

The Bottle Rocket is a BEAST of an amp. Super aggressive, great feeling, and super responsive to volume knob roll off.

Seriously, the demo's don't do it justice.

Such a nice amp.
How DARE you, Sir??? LOL! I kid.

The Bottle Rocket is the dogs bollocks. Can't recommend it enough for what you're looking for. The Quick Rod is stellar as well and can be had in really nice condition for $1200 used all day.

I've played a BE-100. Nice amp. With that said, the tone of the BE is not double the price of a fully loaded Quick Rod better. My Quick Rod has killed all amp gas for me. 1st Gear OD2 is pretty much the tone we all grew up listening to. Puts a smile on my face every time I plug in. I'm not saying that the BE is a bad amp. It does sound killer. I just don't think it's worth $3700. But that's just my opinion.

plus no other amp manufacturer allows you to pick ANY cosmetics you want...

I think I'm agreeing as well. I did own a Quick Rod, and being a metal guy, I oddly enough, loved 1st gear and AC/DC tones and lower gains more than the high gain. This was a used amp that he actually did the 3 gear mod to, before it was production. 2005 or so?? I remembered how fucking LOUD that amp was, and sold it for that reason, (was in an apartment). Now, the loop volume knob solves that. I think I might be gravitating this way. That, or Runt 50. But, the Quick Rod is a hell of alot more amp for the money.

Man you can not go wrong with the Quick Rod. I am thinking of offing my Low B+ one to grab the one with the new mods...

The 1987x is manageable with a pedal, just jump the channels and go low with both volumes, then boost...it can be done. But the other amps mentioned have a MV...so there's that lol....just throwing another option that would work with the new BE pedal people seem to dig..

I'm with SFW on this the Quickrod or competition is where you would want to be. The extra money on the BE although as great as it is something to think about. Maybe find a splawn modded Marshall.

When I saw this:

I thought Bogner Helios 50watt

Then I read this:
The BE tone is the tone, for me. I just don't need all the bells and whistles and price tag.
and I'm thinking you probably gonna have to stay with Friedman to get that BE tone. = Runt 50??

Thought the Henning Bottle rocket was a good idea too, but never played one. ( clips sound great though) I do own a 50watt Helios and a BE100.

I just played one at the LA Amp Show and it was one of those HOLY SHIT moments!
I can't stop thinking about it! :inlove:

Another vote for the Henning Bottle Rocket. I will post a NAD this weekend and will do my best to include a clip of the Bottle Rocket. Here is an older clip I made last year when I was testing the prototype.

If you can find a used smallbox go for it. I thought k I got my combo for around 2k I think they are 3k new.

That's just it, don't see used very often.

FYI

You don't need a newer Splawn with the FX loop volume control (PPIMV). Any volume taper in the loop does the exact same thing. Therefore, I say a used Splawn would be the way to go if you are looking for a bit more open and clear articulate tone. There is not a lot of fizz and compression in the Splawns (outside of maybe the Nitro or Pro Mod). They handle high gain, pedals, and drop tunings very well. The Quick Rod that is. I say that because finding a used Competition will be harder than finding a used Quick Rod. There are simply more Quick Rods out there. If you don't need cleans then great....the Quick Rod has a clean channel but it is super clean and only geared for pedal worshipers and super clean passages IMO. Otherwise, the gain channel on any Gear literally will get nice round bouncy cleans with the git vol lowered. Big massive trannies help with that I'm sure.

The B+, 'new/old', and mid-cut option on a new Quick Rod would be worth investigating if you have $2,300 to burn. Otherwise, a used Quick Rod for $1,100 is hard to beat. Hell buy two of them. :D

Splawn QR.

All the Friedman stuff (BE100 & Runt) are too dark, too distant, with a flubby low end... especially when you crank the volume up past 12:00. They sound like a more Marshally-Bogner... but still very Bogner-ish. Not my thang. Splawn's voicing is much closer to the real deal IMHO.

Tampa doesnt have shit. GC has Orange, Blackstar, Marshall and Lines 6. They cater to entry level.

Just noticed you said Tampa. The GC in Miami has both a brand-new Runt & BE100... just got them in like 2 weeks ago... yeah it's a 4 hour drive, but then you'll know for sure.

Is the PT-20 that close to the BE-100, where an EQ in the loop could add that thickness the EL84's lack??

Yes on the PT-20 with an EQ, I do that with an MXR 10 band but if I had to do it over I'd go for the Runt 50.

IMHO, either get a Quick Rod or give Steve a call. My QR is a 2005 model. If you don't need a clean channel, you can pick one up for about $1k. I run a Weber Mass 200 with mine to keep the volume at reasonable levels. I seriously can not express how happy I am with this amp. I've had this one for about six months, and I've never been happier with my tone. When the drummer says he can hear a difference, you know you're on to something...lol!
