So as some of you guys know, I've got a couple of Komet Concordes. they are rocking heads, made by a couple of great guys in Louisiana.... I've used them on tour, in the studio, etc. to great effect IMHO.

my one issue with them was that when I'd get the gain up pretty high (there's no master, it's just old school 1 volume, crank it up for more gain), the amp would compress and sag in a certain way- I'm sure perfect for some guys, but I wanted it to hold together and punch more. this characteristic was especially noticeable in "fast' mode, which is gainier than "gradual" mode. but I noticed it in gradual mode too, anywhere above 6 or so on the volume. I wanted to be able to dime the volume and get all that useable gain that was on tap.

So I took my amp over to Dave Friedman's and he cracked it open... we both marveled at the beauty of the build, the Komet guys spare no expense and are really master craftsmen. Last thing I would want to do is have them think I don't dig the amp because the basic tone of a Concorde is something to behold! And they are built like tanks!

After listening to the amp, Dave looked it over and made some suggestions... he made 3 tweaks and BAM holy hell it sounds just AWESOME now. I can literally dime the amp in either fast or gradual mode and it is an amazing rock tone.

Clip you say? but of course... this was done fast and dirty, it's a 57 on a port city 1-12" with a Scumback M75 100 watt speaker... I play a Suhr Strat 1st, neck pickup (v60LP) and then bridge (Motor City Blisterbucker), and then switch to a Les Paul bridge pickup (WB Firewater). The amp is on 10, and attenuated 3 clicks with a Komet Airbrake.

For you guys with Concordes- this was a very minimal tweak, so if you like the sound, don't be afraid to have Dave do his thing, it's very easy to return to stock.

thanks Dave!

Thanks Pete! Sounds Killer, those Komets are badass!

Sounds unreal!
How does the Komet airbrake compare to the Faustine that you demoed?

Nice clip Pete. I love the sound of neck sc. It had spank and that glassy sound that I love from single coils :D

The airbrake is a great old school resistor fixed attenuator... not transparent but works really good. I use it as a load too, for slaving... awesome. I prefer it to the Hotplate.

The Faustine is a different beast, much more control, and it's truer to the original sound... I haven't done a/b testing or anything, but it just sounds like the same tone only quieter. From what I can tell. Most attenuators have an effect that becomes seemingly more pronounced the lower you go with them... not so, as far as I can tell, with the Faustine.

Pete, this has nothing to do with this post. I saw you with Chris Cornell Wednesday in Atlanta and you guys killed. I noticed you used 3 or 4 les pauls that night. What kind of pick ups are you running in them?

Cool Wade! I'll try it in the neck of my LP that has the p-94 currently.

Theres a variety of pickups in my les pauls- in the black custom and the goldtop, I have WB habanero bridge/VTP neck sets. In my red sunburst there's a Suhr (I think an SSV) bridge and a Gibson p94 neck. And in the wine red standard there's antiquities, which are cool in a way, but pretty underpowered... It's almost like you're playing a tele or something. So I might try something in there. I have a set of wades afwayu hummers I need to try in something, I will most likely check them out in my suhr t (although that guitar sounds great as is) Always tinkering...

After listening to the clips from Pete, I sent my KF50 to Dave for the mod. Great customer service....he made the mod in a couple of days and out the door it goes. I expect it back within days. Looking forward to cranking it up.
Rick
