Fryette 2/90/2 or 2/50/2 - that is the question...

Hey fellas, some of you know I've recently taken the Axe plunge, and for now I think I am going to stick with the poweramp/cab type of setup, and as time goes on I will play a few gigs running direct and see how I like it, and if it works I'll sell the poweramp. It's funny how the one thing I'm having a hard time letting go of isn't a tube head, it's just the feel of having a 4x12 behind me pushing air, regardless of what's pushing it.

Anyhow, I have a chance to pick up a 2/50/2 but have inherently only play 100watt heads my entire life, and just had some small concerns about headroom, power, lowend, blah blah blah, any issues with the 50 watt stereo unit? Or should I hold out and get a 2/90/2?

If anyone has experience with one or the other, or both, your opinions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I've never tried the 2/50/2 sorry, but I do have the 2/90/2 and it's very tight sounding amp it really surprised me. oh and you won't have to worry about head room it's got plenty

Never tried the 2/50/2, but the 2/90/2 has plenty of headroom and power. It has a tight low end and sounds great.

I had the 2/50/2 and felt it wasn't punchy enough. Sounds good just not a whole lot of bottom. Similar to the difference bw a 50w and 100w head....100w is usually fuller/thicker sounding. The 2/50 is 100w...just in stereo. I've heard the 2/90/2 is a lot better

Had them both, preferred the 2/50/2 by 3rdy,000%

Could u please elaborate as to why? I have a chance to pick up a 2/50/2, but you guys know how it is, you get some gear and still wonder "what if", about the other gear you almost got.

What type of setup did you use? Seems other peoples opinions differ from yours so I was curious what you liked about it so much, thanks man,,

Any other opinions guys?

I ran both of them with an AxeFx Ultra into a Mesa OS 4x12 with v30s.

The main thing was the 2/90/2 sounds kind of sterile. I tried different mixes of tubes and was still left with a rather "meh" feeling. I believe that the 2/90/2 is about as close as you can get to a solid state power amp and not be classifieded as such. lol I know you may be thinking, "But wouldn't you want something kind of flat and sterile for use with your AxeFx?" The answer is pretty much, yes. Except, I can find a cheaper solid state power amp and pocket some change for the price of the 2/90/2. So I sold it...

And I bought the 2/50/2 and immediately upon firing it up, I was impressed with the difference. It had so much more richness and flavor. All in all, it just sounds more like a guitar amp than it's bigger brother. I didn't find it to have any lack of depth or power. Though I was running two Mesa cabs at the time with it. It got plenty loud and plenty thick. lol

I eventually sold that whole rig, pissed up a rope with some other heads, and concluded that the Axe is one tough cookie to beat. So I bought another one, and now run it FRFR and couldn't be happier. ;)

You're describing why I also went for the 2/50/2

I had a 2/90/2 it was insane and I usually use 2 100 watt vintage plexi's that baby 2 rack space job blow my hair back with the Fish... 4 4/12's it is impressive I can imagine that the 290 has more muscle and the 2/50 likely sounds better is totally too loud too but it may lack just a bit of that getting punched in the back feeling.. But remember there is 2 of them so depending how you wire it and how many cabs you have it is probably awesome too

fwiw I did not find the 2/90 to sound harsh or bad and I am a EL34 snob.. with the right pre it is awesome __
I Do think your Axe is not gonna be as cool as your Diezel head though

2/50/2 owner here :)

Don't have the AxeFx... I'm running MAK4 pre & don't find it lacking in punch & volume

2/90/2 owner here  I like the fact I can 1/2 the power if need be.

Use it for my Mak4, Axe-Ultra, and power a variety of cabs (4x12) with it. It's uber clean, clear and has GOBS of headroom. I can't imagine pushing this thing to break up...c'mon, it's practically 2 x 100W head, and lemme tell ya, it gets groundshaking pretty soon on the speedometer.

I have heard good things about both. It depends what the application is, either one is perfect depending on what you want from it. Bottom line is you can't go wrong with Fryette - extremely good quality, clean, well built, tight sounding.
