I retubed my UL last year, just plain old sovteks, like it came with

I'm interested in hearing what everyone else has to say, since I haven't tried anything else. I'm not sure that a power tube swap would eliminate this, but I always seem to get excessive harshness from 3-4k, and I can't to get rid of it, without post EQ or something

What preamp tubes are you using, and speakers? I've tried rolling different preamp tubes in my D60 several times, and always come back to all Ruby Chinese in every spot except V1. I currently have a long plate GE in there, but I used a grey plate RCA for a long time. Still using Sovtek KT88s. Haven't seen a need to switch to something else. Have you checked your bias lately?

Oh dude. I just clicked your amp demos button thing in your signature and realized I used one of your videos as an inspiration to go for the UL when I already had a Sig:X. It was this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfN9vLCOh-I&list=UUuGcV4Qdgg13Bj4QNX-oHrg

Just thought that was neat, now I can thank you for making it :)

Haha, thanks. And 3100 views?! Last time I looked it was at 250

After a bunch of swapping, I settled on an EHX 12AX7 in the V1, a Jan-Philips 12AT7WC in the V6, with the rest being all Ruby's. And I mainly use Alnico Golds. I really should check the bias, especially since the tech I brought it to turned out to be a total jerk. i should have taken it somewhere else. I'm not sure if I want to open up the amp and check myself though

Looks like people are saying good things about JJ's, Ruby's and EH's in the power section. I've been trying to find some good discussions on VHT/Fryette power tubes, but it seems that in a lot of the threads people(even Steve himself, lol) jump in and practically scold you for not using the factory recommendations, lol.

Whatever Laura told me to use and set to me.

I Really don't wig on different tube brands with the ultra leads. They sound great any way you run them. I do run the master at noon or higher, and bias them a little hot.

What about channel volume? I'm also running the master at 12 o'clock or just above. I usually have the channel volume at 1 o'clock or 1:30, anymore and it starts to break up too much for my taste

Sovteks in mine. I've never changed them. Guy I got it from (on here) said he had just done them a few months prior. I don't have a reason to, my UL sounds great to my ears. I run my master volume at 2:00, ch vol down low.

I've tried JJ, Sovtek,Winged C, and penta for KT88 in a ultra lead, for 6550's ive used JJ and winged C in a deliverance.....For the ultra lead i liked the stock sovteks the most. JJ kt88's sounded bloated in the bass dept ,winged C too much high/presence and too open sounding, sovteks sound just right for me in there, however my deliverance does react very favorably to JJ 6550s and winged C kt88's .

With the master at noon or higher, if the channel volume reaches 9-10 o'clock the walls shake. If you are running the master at noon and the channel at 1 o'clock, how are you not sterile?

lol, not sure whether I'm sterile or not, but I have my cabs in a homemade isolation box. Sort of like a small room within a room.

Don't have my sig:x anymore but I liked the shuguang kt88's the best. The sovteks and winged C's got a little spongy at High Volume. And I don't set the bias hot.

Sovteks in my UL. Cheap as hell and I don't hear any difference with power tubes, especially in an amp like the UL which keeps the power section clean and tight until obscene volumes.

So if a a quad of KT88's can run upwards of 200 watts, how do you figure the math to bias a quad for a Deliverance D120H? DO you calculate the tube as a 30 watt tube, and do your math that way?

For example 30 watts / by a PV of 485 x .7 = 43 ma's?

The ballpark number is printed on the circuitboard. For the D60 it's 135 per pair, although the first batch had 125 printed.

That was one thing to get my mind around with the SigX is that it has just 2 tubes but is considered a 100 watt amp. So I just biased like I would normally. But when cranked up loud the Shuguang is the only tube that really hung in there. But that is probably only the case with the SigX because it is trying to get so much out of 2 tubes. I still really like the SigX, with those tubes.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to open up the D120 when I get it and see what is printed in there.
