Fryette Power Station PS-1 as just a load?

Hi guys,

I am getting a used PS-1 to use as a power amp for my Kemper.

I am thinking I might also be able to use it as a load for my amps to use with IRs. The setup would then be:

Amp out - PS Amp in - Apogee Duet - IRs (within computer)

However, the manual says when you turn it on a cabinet must be connected. It has a reactive load though, right? Can I just use it on standby (i.e. not using the power amp section) and run from it into the soundcard? The amp will get the load from the PS-1, right?

Thanks for any help!!

It depends on the serial number of the power station. The original power stations with serial numbers PSL14xxx can not be used as a load only. They changed this on all power stations with serial numbers PSG15xxx and beyond into the current version 2 model. I know this because mine is a PSL14 serial and while I never wanted to use it as a load only before I want to now and am trying to get Fryette to tell me how to do the mod from PSL14 to PSG15 myself without having to send it to them and have down time without it.

Hey man, thanks for the info! I have it here now, mine has a serial number of PSG15XXX so that's good. Do you know how I would have to connect it to use it this way?

Thanks a lot!

The later PS can be run silent as a reactive load with no speaker cable plugged into the speaker out 1, and the unit in either the completely off position or "on" to utilize the effects loop function.

Guys, thanks so much for your help!

Managed to get it to work, pretty simple actually - I just plug in the amp into the "amp in" and use it as a load with the Power Station not even turned on.

I did at first try to use the line out from the power station to go into the Apogee but after reading that its line out is somewhat frequency compensated and having some connection issues (user error) I am now using the PS ONLY as a load and plug a Kemper DI in between the amp and the "amp in" from the PS. Works like a charm!

Cheers
