Hey guys, dont know if this is the right section for this, mods can move this if not.

I wanna thank you guys in advanced for any advice and feedback you guys can give me on the issue. So last night I was at rehearsal testing out a new guitar, and using my main Amp (fryette sig x) Which ive used reliably for about 4 gigs. Then all of a sudden, my tone changed drastically, followed by a high pitch scream/squeal, I immediately unplugged the guitar and pretty lunged and jumped to turn off the amp before something worse would happen. I go at the back of the amp, theres a burnt smell. I popped the cover off, and turned on the amp to see if the the tubes would light up. Well one of the KT88s is dim compared to the other one, by dim I mean almost off, and now no sound comes out of it whatsoever.

My question is, is this just a standard power tube failure? or would you guys think the bad power tube was caused by something else? All my other amps are 6l6 based unfortunately, and would need to buy another set of KT88s to even troubleshoot. Im really hoping its just a power tube gone bad. Also are these things prone to overheating? the amp lives in a amp/rack touring case.

Again thanks for the feedback in advanced.

Jes.

When I first got my sig:x (bought it used), it did something similar and then just quit. It would power up but there. I popped a new fuse and new power tubes in it, and it's been fine ever since.

BTW, I'm definitely not a tech and only have very limited knowledge of this stuff.

I have been using my Sig X since they were released in 2008 .... never heard of over heating problems from anyone. The best thing to do is ask at the forum that Bob linked or contact Fryette direct....

I am not into guess over the internet what the problem really is ... but what you describe is common when a tube dies. Not a good idea to run a tube till it dies. As this might cause other problems.
If you put in other tubes the amp needs to be biased at the same time.... or that also could cause problems ... but usually not right away(For a few minutes ....not hours). Make sure you get the tubes from a well known tube dealer that understands what amp it is going in. Check the fuses also when you re-tube ...I would recommend getting new preamp tubes also. I get my tubes direct from Fryette for my Fryette amps and also recommend the same for you. Since they understand the amp better than anyone.
Not a good idea to run a amp with a bad or dead tube....

Thanks for all the advice, I agree with you stephen, I will contact fryette later on today to order a duet of KT88s for the amp. I really hope its just a bad power tube.

Since the powertubes are more than likely old ... The preamp tubes also could be. I have a pretty large tube collection that I started 41 years ago. Tried several in my Sig X and found I like the stock tubes best.
If you liked the amp with old/worn tubes.... you are going to love it with a fresh set. Tubes burn in when being used .... after a few weeks of regular use it should sound incredible.

Hopefully it's just a tube. I had a cap in the power supply go out on mine. Fryette was awesome to deal with. The tech I took it to took forever though...might have been better to just send it to Fryette.

This is whats weird, I talked to the old owner, He mentioned that he tubes were 2 months old when I got it from him, ive had it about 5 months maybe. The only thing I can think aside from other bad failures is that it was biased too hot.

A tube just like a light bulb can go bad at any time. I have had new ones go bad within days before.
